The ensuite
Brief for the ensuite and bathroom
The requirements for these bathroom designs were improving the existing finishes and fixtures, maintaining the existing amenity and creating quality yet practical spaces. While the layouts worked, the finishes and quality of the fittings in the space needed an upgrade.

The ensuite
It was important to maintain the tonal flow from the limestone flooring, which remains throughout the ground floor but was replaced in these rooms. We had to do that without introducing natural stone, which the client was not keen to continue.

Starting point for both
With a home full of hand-crafted collected valuables, we saw a need to create spaces that would provide a backdrop to these possessions.

We added feature artisanal wall lights, quality joinery with a richly textured facing, and large-format porcelain tiles to meet our client’s desire for a marble-free zone.

- For the feature wall in the bathroom: large-format (900 x 450-millimetre) limestone-coloured natural-looking porcelain tiles.
- For the feature wall in the ensuite: Classic Ceramics Uniquestone in Nite.

- Black Dekton vanity top.
- Yokato Disc tapware from Brodware.
- Claybrook Mini Ellipse bench-mount basins from Rogerseller.

- Each bathroom has a new feature wall and floors.
- Each bathroom has a light by Melbourne firm Articolo.
- We replaced the bath in the bathroom with one from Artedomus.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures:
The home is a slab construction so moving any plumbing would have been a major cost. Fortunately, the existing layouts worked, so we ran with these for both spaces.

What challenges did you have to work around?
Covid-19! The whole construction took place during lockdown so it was slow, with limited numbers allowed on-site.
Why do you think these rooms work?
The volume of both spaces is excellent, with good ceiling heights and details such as full-height doors. The fine handiwork allowed our selection of simple materials and design details to come into their own.
