Room of the Week: An Eclectic Kitchen With Colourful Touches
A base of black, white and timber was 'funned up' with colourful stools and eclectic touches in this Melbourne kitchen
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
With a family of three young children and what would be regarded as a small space, the client emphasised the importance of good, functional design. Both parents enjoy cooking and like to include the children in preparations. They wanted to make cooking a family opportunity and a proper, workable benchtop was an absolute priority, together with functional accessible storage.
Overall, the style of the kitchen was meant to work in with the style of the home.

Starting point
The clients wanted simplicity, but to include decorative open shelving to break away from a purely ‘kitchen’ look. Eclectic tastes were to be considered in the design.
The combination of concrete flooring with aggregate, an exposed corrugated-iron ceiling in the adjacent meals/family area, black bi-fold doors and plywood- lined walls was specified by the building designer, and formed the aesthetic inspiration for the space.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures
The design process involves constantly working on so many variables simultaneously. The look, how it connects to the design and the client’s style preferences, the function-workflow, accessible storage, preparation space, cooking space, dishing up… all these items are of equal importance.

Challenges you worked around
The space is obviously restricted. Ensuring the design ticked all the boxes, especially for a young family in a restricted space, was certainly a challenge. Smart design and storage solutions were crucial.

Why do you think this room works?
The room makes a statement and is warm, inviting and interesting. It has character and personality, and it reflects the individuals that make up this young family. The kitchen is also complementary in how it connects to the surrounding home environment.
