Room of the Week: An Unused Attic Made Into a Child's Suite
A dance-loving child's dream bedroom and playroom were brought to life, despite an awkward layout and tricky roofline
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
The daughter’s playroom.
Brief
To create practical, feminine spaces inspired by the daughter’s love of ballet and reading in the home’s converted attic.
How did Houzz Pro help with this project?
Houzz Pro was great for project managing the processes and for communicating ideas to the client. It allowed the client to be able to quickly accept or reject key items in order to keep the project moving forward, and it kept her involved in all aspects of the decision making.

The daughter’s bedroom.
What look and feel did you want to create?
We wanted the bedroom, located on the second floor, to be a soft, feminine space where the daughter could sit and read a book or draw at her desk.
With the attic playroom on the top floor, we wanted to add some fun, quirky elements to create a space where she could play and hang out with friends.

The attic floor plan.
What were these rooms previously?
The daughter’s bedroom was previously a storage room and the attic space was unused.
What challenges did you have to work around?
The bedroom was not a traditionally shaped room, but it had a few nooks.

What was your thinking behind the bedroom layout?
We worked with the unusual floor plan of the bedroom by using the nooks to create zones for different tasks. For example, we used a bench seat for reading and storage, the alcove area for a workspace with a built-in desk, and the niche next to it for a custom bookcase.

What was your starting point for the new design?
Incorporating the child’s love of ballet and reading and her desire for a classic, feminine bedroom that incorporated pink, as well as her desire for the playroom to be a fun space for craft activities and imaginative play.

The built-in bench seat has generous drawers to store toys, games and dressing-up clothes. There is a laundry chute under the ballet-slipper artwork.
What are some of the key elements?
Custom joinery was important in the bedroom to maximise the use of the space and create functional storage and shelving.
We also had a traditional custom pink velvet bedhead created as a focal point for the room and added some feature wallpaper to bring in a feminine touch.

Tell us about the colour palette
Soft pinks were a key part of the brief for the bedroom, so we opted for a gentle-pink feature wallpaper behind the desk – Cow Parsley from Cole & Son.
In the playroom, we wanted to add a fun, colourful element so we opted for a brighter wallpaper – Birds of Paradise from Milton & King.
Where did most of the budget go?
On the custom joinery for the bedroom.

We included a mix of budget-friendly accessories (see below).
