I had open shelves by window and by sink, loved them. However put them around hood is not the most practical idea to me.

I have an open shelf on one side of my hood but the only issue I have is how dirty the shelves get and anything on them - even with my hood at full extraction - cook anything in the stove and an oily deposit ends on on the shelves. Drives me nuts!!!!

I adore open shelves. So easy. Just make sure everything is lined up and that they aren't too high that you can't reach them. Mine line up with the range hood and the top of the fridge.
