The winners have been named. The results of the 35th Annual Dulux Colour Awards are in. See the residential category winners of Australia’s best colour awards, including comments on the winning designs from the judges: Sarah-Jane Pyke, co-founder of Arent & Pyke; Jefa Greenaway, director of Greenaway Architects; Suzannah Waldron, director of Searle x Waldron Architecture; Mel Bright, director and owner of Studio Bright; and Patrick Loo, director of New Zealand’s Common Space.
Comments by Sarah-Jane Pyke, Arent & Pyke: “In this project, connecting disparate design expressions – high Victorian, high eighties – while adding functional spaces and establishing a relationship with the garden, began with defining a colour palette.
“This in turn identified the personality and mood of the house – ‘cool, quiet, but with some intensity and playfulness’ – and set in motion the design strategy. Such a fully integrated colour-driven response has ensured a cohesive and utterly compelling outcome.
“It is more than paint on a wall; it is an immersive, architectural experience, in which elements such as soft furnishings, landscape materials and lighting are as enmeshed in the whole as the painted surfaces. If that were not enough, the colours themselves are riveting: the pervasive Duck Egg Blue, the subtle grey-green Banksia and rusty warmth of Red Capital. A truly inspired process and outcome,” says Pyke.

Comments by Mel Bright, Studio Bright: “Referencing Australian suburbia, this residence brings heritage together with a modern extension in a cohesive, contextually appropriate response.
“The architects have artfully used materials and colour to evoke the nostalgia of the original house. Satisfying strict heritage guidelines, a heritage colour palette has been applied externally to a hip roof profile that creates an unconventional internal ceiling line. Brick, terrazzo, parquetry and traditional timber boards continue the harmonious transition between the old and new.
“We particularly enjoyed the simplicity of the palette on the restrained architectural expression and could imagine the street and broader suburb it is located within,” says Bright.
