Mezzanine bedrooms can provide the perfect small-space solution for an extra ‘room’, but privacy is more important than ever in this personal zone. Although open by nature, clever separation of mezzanine spaces ensures public and private areas work in harmony, providing the best of both worlds.

Shutter up
Solid shutters have been used to separate the parents’ wing from the open-plan living spaces below in this contemporary Melbourne home. Painted in a neutral grey, when the shutters are closed the upstairs space effectively disappears, creating entirely separate zones.

Keeping the shutters solid ensures maximum light and sound protection from the busy communal space below.

Glass act
When faced with a shoebox-sized space to fit a kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom in this luxury Singapore apartment, designer Joann Ang of Designed Design Associates came up with this creative glass-wall solution.

The glass wall ensures light floods the entire apartment from above, while offering true separation between the living and sleeping zones.

Room with a view
Glass features again in this Miami apartment. Here the glass wall does double duty, providing a barrier between the two areas while ensuring the bedroom doesn’t miss out on the expansive views available from the living room below.

Curtains have been added to ensure extra privacy in an instant.

Closing time
Curtains on their own are a simple addition for mezzanine bedrooms. This loft bedroom features a linen curtain on a stainless cable, a cost-effective design solution.

Colour story
Sometimes colour is all you need to draw attention from one area to another. This historical church in the small village of Laggan, NSW, has been converted into a smart holiday house by Sandberg Schoffel Architects.

A mezzanine bedroom was built above and behind the kitchen, but attention is drawn to the bright orange kitchen below, allowing the bedroom to recede into the background. The bold colour choice is a perfect foil for the neutral white of the mezzanine level.

Bibliophiles will love this creative solution. Designer Stephane Chamard wrapped bookshelves around a low wall that screens the mezzanine bedroom from the main level of this Canadian loft. Chamard also moved the bedroom staircase to one side for increased privacy.

The vintage Concorde lounge chair by Pierre Paulin (reupholstered in electric blue), provides a perfect reading spot.

Perfect ply
Now for something completely different. A sleeping platform was created on top of a plywood cube in the renovation of a 25 square metre fisherman’s cottage. The interior of the cube contains a bathroom and toilet. Despite being tiny, the sleeping area is light, private and perfectly functional.

Note: Plywood is having a real design moment, and it’s easy to see why when you see its many uses. Read all about this natural material and creative ways to use it here.
Moroso Construction
The ‘wooden box’ concept appears again in a very different way in this new build in San Francisco. Here a ‘wall of life’ has been created from reclaimed materials, enclosing the staircase and rising through the centre of the house.

French polish
The innovative staircase in this French home is the star attraction, pulling attention away from the sleeping nook above. Featuring a work space, storage cupboards and display space, the owners have most definitely made the most of this small space. (Just mind your step on those stairs!)

Child’s play
Kids’ spaces are the perfect place to experiment, and children certainly love to climb. The loft bed in this Sydney playroom serves as a cubby house or spare bed for guests.

Next level
Could this be the ultimate in barely there bedrooms? The loft space in this eclectic French home is so discreet you can hardly see it’s there. You wouldn’t want to fall out of bed at night, though.

All in one
This Brisbane residence has it all, with library shelving, curtains and a dramatic light fitting all drawing attention away from the mezzanine space. It’s also perfect for night-time reading – just make sure you keep your library ladder handy.
