Urban Garden Designs From 9 Indian Homes
Nature can be included in urban living seamlessly. Here are tips on how to make a roof garden or plan a small balcony
Most of us lead hectic lives; once back home after a hard day’s work, all we want is to retire to a relaxing and rejuvenating spot. What better than gardens and greenery around you to bring peace, calm and serenity? Those who do not have the luxury of a garden or a balcony need not worry. If you have a rooftop available, this too can work as the perfect spot to nurture greenery. Let’s see what these urban garden ideas have to show us.
2. Sometimes there’s nothing better than spending the day in your rooftop garden with close friends, a few drinks and delectable snacks. Throw in a barbecue by the night, and it becomes a perfect day off. I like the way Pradnya Ranaware has incorporated the ceiling beams in the architectural design to partly shade the open area. These beams can be used to hang planters during the day and glass orbs at the night.
3. Many people baulk at the thought of a high-maintenance garden. So don’t have one!
A small deck garden simply needs a little grass cover and a few potted plants with a boundary that allows for additional living spaces to be created beyond its perimeter, as is seen in this image. This garden has a further raised platform seen at the far end which can either double as a counter for serving food or a mini stage for days when you could just do with some drama! Anjali Rawat Architects have also accessorised the area with an umbrella and a swing for additional seating.

4. Dream spaces like this one can be achieved with a bit of creativity (and patience). SAK Designs has designed this inspirational tropical deck patio-cum-garden. A part of the area gets a breezy Moroccan look with the dramatic draping. The other half has plants and a stone-laid garden, bringing a very Zen-like feel to the mix.
5. What to do when space is limited but you want a little of everything? A360 a r c h i t e c t s creates an outdoor space that has it all: pots, a mini grass garden, water cascading from the walls, and a dry patio. Everything ties in together with accent and mood lighting.
6. Backyards can serve as gardens too, just like terraces and rooftops. If you have a backyard, raised garden beds are a fabulous option to consider for planting rather than mulching your entire backyard and dealing with soil and water problems. Note the embedded lighting in the raised garden beds, strategically placed to make this a well-illuminated area after dark.

7. Tall rooftop garden plants and foliage always look great, like this space by Studio Nishita Kamdar that brings a tropical feel to this timber deck. Raised garden beds allow for hassle-free gardening. Add contemporary, weather-proof furnishings like the ones here to complete the sophisticated look.
8. Care for some meditation and green tea? Well, you can imagine your mornings beginning like this in a rooftop garden complemented with a captivating gazebo. This space by Perikali is a stylish outdoor area with a hint of Japanese aesthetics, thanks to the screens.
