The exterior of your home says a lot about the decorative delights that lie within, so you’ll want it to make a statement. If you’re building or renovating and looking for ideas for your facade, you’ve come to the right place – here are the 10 most-saved exteriors so far in 2021, with insights into what makes each one special. For this story, we looked at which photos you, our users, saved in the first six months of 2021, from images uploaded by pros from July 2020 to July 2021.
Lindon Homes Pty Ltd
1. Mixed materials
We’ve heard a lot about the importance of layering different textures and finishes inside our homes for an impactful look. But as this new build in Brisbane, Queensland, by Lindon Homes shows, layering can be used to stunning effect outdoors too.

Mixing a variety of materials and finishes – textural stone, sleek steel and earthy timber – in different shapes, including organic and linear, gives this exterior instant kerb appeal.
DB Build
2. Natural touch
Lush, trailing greenery – it seems we can’t get enough of it. In this luxury home by DB Build on Queensland’s Gold Coast, trailing vines soften the sharp, minimalist lines of the entry area and draw visitors into the courtyard beyond.

Robeson Architects
3. Texture is tops
Combining different textures is a clever way to add depth and visual interest to a space. The outdoor area of this new build in Perth, WA, by Robeson Architects is a great example. It combines recycled bricks with sleek, steel battens and warm timber touches to create a space that feels both inviting and characterful – and you loved it as much as we do.
Green Sheep Collective
4. Natural beauty
Timber is a surefire way to add warmth and natural appeal to your exterior. In this Melbourne home by Green Sheep Collective, the architect has opted for soaring timber cladding with plenty of natural variation in colour and grain, creating a striking contrast against the cool concrete and emphasising the home’s connection to nature.
Justin Loe Architects
5. Connection is key
We love homes with indoor-outdoor flow in Australia, and this Sydney home by Justin Loe Architects captures the look perfectly. The stacking-sliding doors of the open-plan living and kitchen extensions open up completely. The design seamlessly integrates the interior with the backyard, while the charred timber cladding adds a rugged and rustic edge. What’s not to love?
Mihaly Slocombe
6. Warm touches
If you’re looking to create a warm and timeless feel to your exterior, mid-tone timber is a smart choice. It evokes a classic look that’s unlikely to date, and sits comfortably alongside popular exterior colours, such as white, greige and pale grey, as well as materials including concrete and steel.

In this charming Melbourne house by Mihaly Slocombe, warm-tone timber battens provide shading and privacy to the first-floor master suite and blend harmoniously with the timber decking below. Extra points for the way in which the battens have been arranged to accentuate the shape of the gable roof.
MMAD Architecture
7. Time for fun
After a difficult couple of years, we’re all ready for a little joy and playfulness. So we’re not surprised to see that one of the top-10 exteriors you’ve chosen includes this home in Bentleigh, Victoria, by MMAD Architecture, with a cherry-red spiral staircase at its centre. It creates an irresistible talking point and echoes the curves in the first-floor balcony beautifully.
Heliconia
8. Hamptons forever
Ah, the Hamptons look – forever in our hearts. In this Sydney home by Heliconia, the ever-popular aesthetic is captured with weatherboard cladding, warm stone detailing and a custom panelled garage door. The perfect fit for the home’s coastal setting.

9. Gentle neutrals
We can see why you were drawn to the exterior of this family home in Seaforth, NSW, created by architect Georgia Wilson of Georgina Wilson Associates – it has a wonderfully relaxed and welcoming feel.

It has been created with an earthy, layered palette of textured stone, weatherboards and white baton fencing and is complemented by lush, native landscaping. The result? An irresistible, holiday-like feel.
Nulook Homes
10. Focus on outdoor living
Outdoor rooms are no longer just an afterthought – they are an important part of our home lifestyle and we want to be able to use them year-round. The fact that you selected the alfresco area in this Perth home by Nulook Homes is testament to that.

The pavilion is just a few steps down from the home’s main living space, making access easy, and it features a fully appointed outdoor kitchen with beautiful stone detailing to the splashback and benchtop, plus a generous dining island. Weekend barbecues just got an upgrade!
