The inspiration was a Thai inspired retreat that offered comfortable lounging outdoors. The suspended outdoor bed displays an asian aesthetic while giving the lounger a zen floating sensation. This Hardscape offers great entertaining with outdoor lounging around a beautiful custom fire pit and a custom built-in barbecue kitchen.

The solid stone "moon gate" is the primary entry to the garden. It frames the pagoda style pavilion and the "good karma" boulder. Our masons hand chiseled each stone on site and set the stone against a wooden arched form to ensure consistency of the arc.

A former raised ranch turned glassy, open structure with views from front to back looks out onto a geometric Japanese garden. JMMDS designed a landscape journey that encircles the house made of a simple palette of bluestone squares and oblongs that travel over gravel, grass, and plantings to end up at a little teahouse on a hill. While Japanese in spirit, the garden is designed using distinctly un-Japanese forms: circles, squares, and S-curves. Photo: Grey Crawford. Here is a night time photo of an Asian / Japanese Garden we installed recently. Highlighted here in this photo is a weeping Japanese Maple, a pagoda that we lit up from the inside, some rock accents and some bamboo. The lighting we used was the Design Pro LED line by Kichler. The clients had built a magnificent Italianate 'villa' with spectacular views of the Santa Barbara coastline. They had assembled an impressive array of garden objects from around the world which were to be incorporated into the gardens. But the challenges were numerous. Object scale had to carefully managed in this 40 foot by 80 foot space -- The statuary, hardscape elements, and fountains were carefully separated throughout the landscape, in order to de-emphasize the disparate sizes. Objects included a six-foot high Buddha, a 12" high prayer bell, and a massive 1,500 pound stone urn. Additionally, spectacular tree specimens were chosen and carefully placed to provide a counterweight to the other objects in the garden. * Builder of the Year: Best Landscape and Hardscape, Santa Barbara Contractors Association

Ground One Landscape Design + BuildGround One Landscape Design + Build
The homeowners expressed interest in upgrading the landscape surrounding their existing in-ground swimming pool. On the initial site visit, we were greeted by an outdated concrete pool deck, plastic pool coping and a few lonely mature shrubs and trees. The north end of the backyard was enclosed by the garage wall and a few half-hearted attempts at growing vines to mask its massiveness. The homeowners’ goal was to refresh the existing landscape while working within the constraints of the existing pool and its narrow perimeter spaces. The homeowners admire Asian garden aesthetics, so ornamentation and plant species were selected that emphasized simplicity in their distinct forms. The narrow planting spaces around the pool were maximized through layers of texture, where pebbles and accent rocks complement and contrast with unique plant forms. The pool now feels integrated with this lush landscape of ornamental grasses and specimen evergreens.
