This classic Tudor home in Oakland was given a modern makeover with an interplay of soft and vibrant color, bold patterns, and sleek furniture. Nestled within an established west-end enclave, this transformation is both contemporary yet traditional—in keeping with the surrounding neighbourhood's aesthetic. A family home is refreshed with a spacious master suite, large, bright kitchen suitable for both casual gatherings and entertaining, and a sizeable rear addition. The kitchen's crisp, clean palette is the perfect neutral foil for the handmade backsplash, and generous floor-to-ceiling windows provide a vista to the lush green yard and onto the Humber ravine. The rear 2-storey addition is blended seamlessly with the existing home, revealing a new master suite bedroom and sleek ensuite with bold blue tiling. Two additional additional bedrooms were refreshed to update juvenile kids' rooms to more mature finishes and furniture—appropriate for young adults.

This warm and inviting space has great industrial flair. We love the contrast of the black cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and accessories against the bright warm tones in the tile. Pebble tile was used as accent through the space, both in the niches in the tub and shower areas as well as for the backsplash behind the sink. The vanity is front and center when you walk into the space from the master bedroom. The framed medicine cabinets on the wall and drawers in the vanity provide great storage. The deep soaker tub, taking up pride-of-place at one end of the bathroom, is a great place to relax after a long day. A walk-in shower at the other end of the bathroom balances the space. The shower includes a rainhead and handshower for a luxurious bathing experience. The black theme is continued into the shower and around the glass panel between the toilet and shower enclosure. The shower, an open, curbless, walk-in, works well now and will be great as the family grows up and ages in place.

The architecture of this mid-century ranch in Portland’s West Hills oozes modernism’s core values. We wanted to focus on areas of the home that didn’t maximize the architectural beauty. The Client—a family of three, with Lucy the Great Dane, wanted to improve what was existing and update the kitchen and Jack and Jill Bathrooms, add some cool storage solutions and generally revamp the house. We totally reimagined the entry to provide a “wow” moment for all to enjoy whilst entering the property. A giant pivot door was used to replace the dated solid wood door and side light. We designed and built new open cabinetry in the kitchen allowing for more light in what was a dark spot. The kitchen got a makeover by reconfiguring the key elements and new concrete flooring, new stove, hood, bar, counter top, and a new lighting plan. Our work on the Humphrey House was featured in Dwell Magazine.
