Our clients found that the kitchen layout didn’t function well and that the storage space was lacking. We opened up the space by removing a small wall separating the dining room and kitchen and then adding a support beam. The chimney was exposed on all sides, adding warmth and character. Moving the refrigerator and adding the peninsula allowed for more countertop work space. The microwave was taken off the counter and hidden in the peninsula, along with added cabinets. Combined with a tall pantry the kitchen now has more storage. A new ceiling allowed for pot lights and two new pendants over the counter, making the once gloomy kitchen now bright.

Two Officine Gullo Kitchens, one indoor and one outdoor, embody the heart and soul of the living area of a stunning Rancho Santa Fe Villa, curated by the American interior designer Susan Spath and her studio. For this project, Susan Spath and her studio were looking for a company that could recreate timeless settings that could be completely in line with the functional needs, lifestyle, and culinary habits of the client. Officine Gullo, with its endless possibilities for customized style was the perfect answer to the needs of the US designer, creating two unique kitchen solutions: indoor and outdoor. The indoor kitchen is the main feature of a large living area that includes kitchen and dining room. Its design features an elegant combination of materials and colors, where Pure White (RAL9010) woodwork, Grey Vein marble, Light Grey (RAL7035) steel painted finishes, and iconic chromed brass finishes all come together and blend in harmony. The main cooking area consists of a Fiorentina 150 cooker, an extremely versatile, high-tech, and functional model. It is flanked by two wood columns with a white lacquered finish for domestic appliances. The cooking area has been completed with a sophisticated professional hood and enhanced with a Carrara marble wall panel, which can be found on both countertops and cooking islands. In the center of the living area are two symmetrical cooking islands, each one around 6.5 ft/2 meters long. The first cooking island acts as a recreational space and features a breakfast area with a cantilever top. The owners needed this area to be a place to spend everyday moments with family and friends and, at the occurrence, become a functional area for large ceremonies and banquets. The second island has been dedicated to preparing and washing food and has been specifically designed to be used by the chefs. The islands also contain a wine refrigerator and a pull-out TV. The kitchen leads out directly into a leafy garden that can also be seen from the washing area window.

In this kitchen up in Desert Mountain, we provided all of the cabinetry, countertops and backsplash to create the Mid Century Modern style for our clients remodel. The transformation is substantial compared to the size and layout it was before, making it more linear and doubling in size. For the perimeter we have white skinny shaker cabinetry with pops of Hickory wood to add some warmth and a seamless countertop backsplash. The island features painted black cabinetry with the skinny shaker style for some contrast and is over 14' long with enough seating for 8 people. In the fireplace bar area, we have also the black cabinetry with a fun pop of color for the backsplash tile along with honed black granite countertops. The selection choices of painted cabinetry, wood tones, gold metals, concrete flooring and furniture selections carry the style throughout and brings in great texture, contrast and warmth.

Lustrous walnut flooring literally lays the groundwork for this suburban renovation. Rutt Regency Cabinetry with Flat-panel doors give center stage to the starring features. Perimeter (Rutt Regency) cabinetry is a soft white, while a repetition of rich walnut dresses the island cabinets, the refrigerator framing as well as the stools and adjacent dining table with chairs. That contrast creates a point-counterpoint dialogue with the floors. Though the top trim is deceivingly simple, it’s actually a triple stack of moldings. Countertops are a mix of Caesarstone quartz on the perimeter and marble on the center island. Vertically-stacked subway tiles in assorted whites and off-whites add subtle shading and dimension. Viking’s white finish graces the refrigerator and range, while the dishwasher and wine cooler sport cabinetry panels. Conveniently located opposite the refrigerator, a stainless microwave drawer was placed in the island. A delightful surprise designed by the architect is hidden behind the island: handcrafted panels and a storage cabinet faced in varied-width slats of walnut that speak to the attention to detail in this room. Warm brass was chosen for pulls, faucet, and pendants. The brass strap on the white vent hood is punctuated by a single oversized pyramid-shaped rivet; another small detail that speaks volumes. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? Can you allow yourself some more space and a big island with seating? Are you designing your kitchen from scratch or renovating an existing design? Which appliances do you already own and what are their measurements? Are there windows you need to take into consideration when planning cabinets? How do kitchen, living and dining areas connect? Depending on your space and needs, you want to use a shape that suits you. U, G, or L-shaped kitchen, with or without island or peninsula? Know your dimensions, plan cabinetry carefully and consider the placement of your appliances. You don’t want to end up with a finished design, only for your significant other to question where the fridge is supposed to go. Consider from the start where your fridge, oven, microwave and sink goes to save yourself from starting again from scratch - remember the kitchen work triangle! You also want to plan the layout of your cabinets. Maybe you’re planning for a pantry and can do with less storage space in your kitchen, so that your design can be one without upper or lower cabinets for a different look. A corner cabinet can be a smart storage solution if you want to keep the look clean and simple.

3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste. Consider what your cooking style is for a start - Italy is known for its cuisine, so italian kitchen designs are generally popular. Also consider ergonomics - depending on how much time you spend in your kitchen, the height of your counters can make a big difference to your overall health. You also want to consider colour and finishes of cabinets, countertops and splashbacks. Which colour do you want your cupboards to be? Simple, timeless white or rather making a statement in black? Maybe rather a rustic wood? Also consider the colour of your floor - if you have dark floors, you may want to keep cabinets lighter. You could also go for an all-white look and choose black appliances for contrast. Once you know which style you fancy, don’t forget how you will be using the space. You want to keep cooking in mind, as well as how easy to clean and maintain the space will be. How many cooks do you need to accommodate? Do you have kids around? How much storage do you need?
