A modern mid-century house in the Los Feliz neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills, this was an extensive renovation. The house was brought down to its studs, new foundations poured, and many walls and rooms relocated and resized. The aim was to improve the flow through the house, to make if feel more open and light, and connected to the outside, both literally through a new stair leading to exterior sliding doors, and through new windows along the back that open up to canyon views. photos by Undine Prohl

The three-level Mediterranean revival home started as a 1930s summer cottage that expanded downward and upward over time. We used a clean, crisp white wall plaster with bronze hardware throughout the interiors to give the house continuity. A neutral color palette and minimalist furnishings create a sense of calm restraint. Subtle and nuanced textures and variations in tints add visual interest. The stair risers from the living room to the primary suite are hand-painted terra cotta tile in gray and off-white. We used the same tile resource in the kitchen for the island's toe kick.

Our client wanted a welcoming family space combining new updates with old memories. The two framed art pieces illustrate how both can live side-by-side. On the left is an old sepia family photo, while the piece on the right is a new abstract art piece. We used similar wood frames to relate the dissimilar art . Also, the new modern bookshelves co-exist very well with the British Colonial tall rattan chair in front of them. A jute area rug, large leather ottoman, and rattan furniture are part of the comfortable mix. the
