This Chelsea loft was transformed from a beat-up live-work space into a tranquil, light-filled home with oversized windows and high ceilings. The open floor plan created a new kitchen, dining area, and living room in one space, with two airy bedrooms and bathrooms at the other end of the layout. We used a pale, white oak flooring from LV Wood Floors throughout the space, and kept the color palette light and neutral. The kitchen features custom cabinetry with minimal hardware and a wide island with seating on one side. Appliances are Wolf and Subzero. Track lighting by Tech Lighting. Photo by Maletz Design

The desire to update a 1960’s vintage kitchen and provide entertainment space for an accomplished gourmet cook was the driving force for the project. The existing house with its strong horizontality imposed a design aesthetic that clearly identified the problem of adding volumetric space to the kitchen. Initial design direction by the clients included maximizing daylight into the space while working with the existing structural components and adding finished basement space for their wine cellar. Conceptually, the cooking, prep and serving area are within a double height space surrounded by the existing single story entertaining areas. The strong horizontality of the existing structure is carried across the double height space, referencing the horizontality of the existing house. Material detailing of the addition is in keeping with all architectural detailing present in the existing structure. The addition creates a striking focal point for the house while responding to the style and intent of the original architecture.

This kitchenette has two full size refrigerator and freezer drawers, and a microwave oven. It is a fun little area to store drinks and serve-ware for parties in the recreation area.

This house is owned by a couple of professional restaurateurs who were looking to replace their cramped old 50's kitchen. We began by removing a wall (in-line with the railing behind the range) separating the kitchen from the living room, allowing in spacious views of east Portland and Mt. Hood in the distance. In this cook's kitchen we designed a custom, restaurant grade stainless steel countertop with an integrated sink (left). Beautiful cherry cabinets with sleek brushed nickel hardware helped to take the space into the modern era. An integrated computer/office nook in the corner provides a place to look up the latest recipe. Photo By Nicks Photo Design

With a busy young family and two large dogs, the design brief for this Wynnum kitchen was for a contemporary look, durable finishes, increased storage & functionality and lots of drawers. Finishes include Polytec Ultraglaze doors in "superior white" and "royal oyster", Quantum Quartz benchtops in "carbon matt" and "white Calacatta" porcelain panels on the splash-backs. All cabinets incorporate Blumotion drawers and Blum "tip-on" doors. The double pantry also features internal soft-close drawers. Built-in appliances include Bosch pyrolytic under bench oven and gas on glass cooktop, AEG fully integrated dishwasher and integrated rangehood, Baumatic integrated microwave, sink and tap which all compliment the modern seamless look. Poised on the edge of a deep ravine overlooking the beautiful Barton Creek, the core of this 1960’s renovated home centers on the kitchen. This particular space was artfully collaborated on with the home's owner, who is the owner and chef of one of Austin's premiere restaurants. The original 155 square foot kitchen was not inspiring at all to the culinary professional who was unhappy with the size, layout, lighting, space, lack of appliances, and overall outdated style. One of the key goals was to create a space not only for everyday cooking, but for entertaining as well. The overall design of the kitchen incorporates large amounts of counter space, commercial-style appliances, transparent refrigerator and pantry, as well as natural lighting to pair with necessary task lighting. The openness of the design allows for the dining area to seamlessly flow into the space for everyday family gatherings or entertaining on special occasions. Photography by Adam Steiner
