Maintaining the Lake House Feel This homeowner came into Braen Supply looking for advice on choosing a stone to match his lake house. With cedar shake siding already in place the benefits of using warmer earth tones to keep the lake house feel in place was discussed. To compliment the project the homeowner was looking for a patio and walkway stone that would pair perfectly with the thin veneer that was chosen for the landscape and retaining walls. Norwegian Buff was the perfect match for the area around the pool as well as for the walkway leading to the home. Working With the Experts The experts at Braen Supply were able to find the perfect material to meet the homeowner’s needs and then used that to find materials for the facade, patio, walkway and steps. Together they were able to achieve the perfect blend of colors and stones to keep the lake house look and feel the homeowner loved.

Our client’s garden was bereft of any interest, other than a large shed at the end of the garden, and a small patio outside the house. An unattractive stand of conifers dominated one side of the garden, and overpowered the space. These two areas were linked using a bold design of interlinking circles, with a cobbled path snaking its’ way down the garden to create a feeling of greater width and depth. A dry stone wall sets off the patio, and frames the entrance into the main part of the garden. A feature pot is set on a plinth at the bottom end of the garden, where it is visible from the house. The planting is colourful and interesting, with box balls used to reinforce the circular theme. The conifers have been removed and replaced with attractive ornamental trees that will provide more year round interest

All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a country garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
