The Wexler kitchen employs a mix and match approach to its design with some cabinets in rough sawn oak with a white tinted oiled finish and some smooth painted in Farrow and ball Black Blue. This approach really fitted in with the client's eclectic taste. The reinforced glass panels on the large storage unit is repeated on the wall cabinets on the opposite wall and give an industrial feel along with a cluster of filament bulbs above the island and the large castors on the island unit which is movable. A feature worthy of note is the integrated burner for stir-frying on the island top powered by a propane cylinder, the client kept their original AGA range cooker as well. The installation is brought together by Silestone lagoon worktops and quirky copper handles. Fitted alcove shelves down the other end of the long room, also painted in Black Blue complete this unique and stylish kitchen.

Projet Wabi-sabi

Pairing their love of Mid-Century Modern design and collecting with the enjoyment they get out of entertaining at home, this client’s kitchen remodel in Linda Vista hit all the right notes.
Set atop a hillside with sweeping views of the city below, the first priority in this remodel was to open up the kitchen space to take full advantage of the view and create a seamless transition between the kitchen, dining room, and outdoor living space. A primary wall was removed and a custom peninsula/bar area was created to house the client’s extensive collection of glassware and bar essentials on a sleek shelving unit suspended from the ceiling and wrapped around the base of the peninsula.
Light wood cabinetry with a retro feel was selected and provided the perfect complement to the unique backsplash which extended the entire length of the kitchen, arranged to create a distinct ombre effect that concentrated behind the Wolf range.
Subtle brass fixtures and pulls completed the look while panels on the built in refrigerator created a consistent flow to the cabinetry.
Additionally, a frosted glass sliding door off of the kitchen disguises a dedicated laundry room full of custom finishes. Raised built-in cabinetry houses the washer and dryer to put everything at eye level, while custom sliding shelves that can be hidden when not in use lessen the need for bending and lifting heavy loads of laundry. Other features include built-in laundry sorter and extensive storage.

Hidden in this near westside neighborhood of modest midcentury ranches is a multi-acre back yard that feels worlds away from the hustle of the city. These homeowners knew they had a gem, but their cramped and dim interior and lack of outdoor living space kept them from the full enjoyment of it. They said they wanted us to design them a deck and screen porch; we replied, "sure! but don't you want a better connection to that luscious outdoor space from the inside, too?" The whole back of the house was eventually transformed, inside and out. We opened up and united the former kitchen and dining, and took over an extra bedroom for a semi-open tv room that is tucked behind a built-in bar. Light now streams in through windows and doors and skylights that weren't there before. Simple, natural materials tie to the expansive yard and huge trees beyond the deck and also provide a quiet backdrop for the homeowners' colorful boho style and enviable collection of house plants.

The open plan kitchen mixes simple wood-grained IKEA cabinets with a classic 1952 vintage O'Keefe & Merritt double oven, offset by a custom installation of vintage hand-painted Spanish tiles as a backsplash, set into classic subway tile. The peninsula and counters are a gray quartz, and the farmhouse sink is from IKEA. Fridge and Dishwasher are stainless. Custom stove hood surround hide a powerful extractor fan. Great quartz counters, and Green Smoke accent wall on peninsula

Rather than keeping a solid interior wall above the kitchen sink, the couple opened up the space with a pass through. Acting as an interior window, the pass through maintains the open concept of the first floor while borrowing light from a neighboring room.
