We weren’t sure what to do with this awkward corner of the living room until we hit on the idea of creating a reading nook. Don’t worry, earthquake watchers—our collection of Muppet busts is secured with museum gel!

The living and dining area is flooded with light and good cheer. Maya didn't want to obstruct any views of the river so he was very conscious of that in the design. A neutral palette is soothing to the eye while a jolt of warm persimmon on the midcentury chairs and a sculpture from R.E. Steele in East Hampton provide focal points. Sisal carpet from Merida creates a graphic counterpoint to the linen upholstery on the Maya-designed sofa and armchairs. Carefully placed sculpture and artwork, along with splashes of vibrant color, provide focus and a cheerful quality to the overall aesthetic.

This library melds traditional and ethnic elements, incorporating African items from the client’s travels. Serving as a library and music room, this space has a neutral and off white palette framed by dark wood moldings and trim and stained wooden shutters and a custom stained bookcase. The draperies are made of hand-painted taupe velvet, and the hardware is painted metallic silver with glass finials.
A baby grand piano stands on the room’s sisal rug, accented at its center with a chinoiserie cocktail table atop a zebra skin. Oak stained dark walnut hardwood flooring sets off the sage green tweed lounge chair, as well as a British colonial daybed topped with taupe chenille and throw pillows created from an African textile.

In this living room, we were working with an open concept floor plan that was both dining room and living room. We found a great emerald green velvet sofa -- it was giving us "art deco Paris", and we paired it with a vintage rattan armchair we found in a West Palm Beach antiques store, and a contemporary marble table. All sitting on top of the world's greatest sisal rug, Ikea's "Lohals" rug. This thing has never failed us! The walls are a very very light grey, and we installed inside-mount woven bamboo blinds for a classic effect.
