Backyard Bath House
Backyard Bath House

After a lilac tree died and left a hole in the southwest corner of our back yard, we briefly entertained the idea of adding an expensive hot tub. After coming across this great clawfoot tub at a local salvage store for $100, I conceived this three-season bathhouse instead. A plumber installed a hot water bibb on the side of the house and a concealed, heavy duty hot water hose supplies water to the tub. A bamboo privacy screen can be lowered in the front and a vintage lye soap box is transformed into an ambient light fixture for atmospheric night soaking. Towel hooks, river rock and a simple cedar deck complete the spa-like experience. Photo, design and construction by Sloan Schang

The doors open for easy removal so the cans can be rolled to the curb on collection day. The cans are only steps away from the kitchen but are completely hidden from sight in the garden.

The craftsmen at Hamilton Building Supply were delighted to build this gorgeous curved walkway for one of the rooftop gardens that can be found at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. We kept in mind the sick children and their families who would be enjoying the gardens while their little ones had to remain in the hospital. This project is a study to show how a walk such as this is constructed from start to finish.

"Because it is all outside I won't spend a lot of money on any of it; I find cheap old junk in the trash or garage sales with cute colors or patterns and make it happen." Inspired by the colors from the garden, various items are recovered or painted in pastel hues to create a comfortable and engaging place to relax. "Raymond and I love our outdoor wrap-around porch in the summer. Because I decorate it like a house outdoors it creates the comfort of a southern home with surrounding gardens that are bursting with color and nature and fresh smells everyday. You can't help but want to sit and drink your coffee there in the morning and soak it all in. You smell the Lake Erie breeze and hear the waves crashing; its so serene." West Village Backyard Gets Makeover with Artificial Turf & Plants
West Village Backyard Gets Makeover with Artificial Turf & Plants
Amber Freda Garden DesignAmber Freda Garden Design
This backyard for a townhouse in Manhattan’s West Village is made for entertaining and relaxation! Our re-design of the space included artificial turf to replace a failing lawn, updated plantings, overhead string lighting, and new lawn furniture. The existing plantings of boxwoods and birch trees, while healthy, were a little bland and boring looking, so we spiced up the plantings by adding more color, texture, and variety to the space. Our design plans included purple heuchera, gold hakone grass, creeping Jenny, rhododendrons, and a coral-bark maple tree. We picked a high-end, eco-friendly (petroleum free) artificial turf that looks exactly like real grass and is maintenance-free. It’s especially important to choose petroleum free turf for high traffic areas where children and pets may frequently come into contact with the turf. See more of our projects at www.amberfreda.com.
