Front Landscape - Bel Marin Keys Lagoon Side Residence

Photos taken just after installation, there are more recent photos in this project. The front areas of this landscape were transformed from a tired, water thirsty lawn into a contemporary setting with dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's entrance and a new driveway using large concrete slabs with small black pebbles set in resin. Plants for sun and part shade complete this project, just completed in February 2014. The Entry and Parking Courtyard : The approach to the front of the house leads up the driveway into a spacious cobbled courtyard framed by a series of stone walls , which in turn are surrounded by plantings. The stone walls also allow the formation of a secondary room for entry into the garages. We were asked to design and plant the driveway and gardens surrounding a substantial period property in Cobham. Our Scandinavian clients wanted a soft and natural look to the planting. We used long flowering shrubs and perennials to extend the season of flower, and combined them with a mix of beautifully textured evergreen plants to give year-round structure. We also mixed in a range of grasses for movement which also give a more contemporary look.

New construction home designed and built by Hartman Baldwin. The landscape is extensive and was a collaborative effort between HB and NC Design. We created a beautiful drought tolerant landscape that blended in well with the surrounding hillsides. To ensure a healthy, vibrant environment for years to come, many colorful succulents, grasses, yuccas and flowering low-water perennials were used throughout the property, along with non-fruiting Olive trees and Palo Verde.

The entrance to this cape style home has a fenced Perennial Cottage Garden that includes, Boxwood, Japanese Holly, Coreopsis, Catmint, Gaura, and vinca. The bluestone pathway leads from cobble edge peastone driveway to the buildings entry. Nikko Blue Hydrangea border the front lawn. The home has cedar shake shingles which are traditionally used on Cape Cod because they withstand harsh coastal environments.

How to Create a Garden for Your Home

Decide which plants to use

The greenery you choose is critical to your look. For example, if you’re trying to create a tropical garden palm trees and bamboo are your go-to options. Other popular options are golden cane palm trees and fern for ground cover. From there you can add some colour with bright flowers like frangipani, hibiscus or bromeliads. All these are actually quite hardy plants, so once established, your tropical garden is actually quite easy to maintain. Use this structure and apply it to your style. Research which plants you need to set your base for a garden and go from there.

Add some decor

If the plants don’t quite do it for you yet, or if you want to add some extra wow-factor, consider adding some extra features. Even if you can’t accommodate a swimming pool, hot tub or pond, you could look at smaller water features. Simple rocks can also have a great effect, while statues and gnomes will add some extra character. Don’t forget to add some furniture so you have a nice place to sit and enjoy your garden!
