This Project Includes a large Waterfall, 100' of Stream, 3 Bridges, over 1000' of stone walls, a 500,000 gallon pond, an amphitheater, a peninsula, a beach, a boat launch ramp, boulders throughout the entire pond, large trees, a boat dock, stone stairs, multiple terraces out of decomposed granite, and a large parking area. The Waterfall, which is the start of this large waterfeature, acts as the Cornerstone for this Project. A number of the boulders are up to 8 feet across! About 1200 gallons a minute (72,000gph) flows over this waterfall. The waterfeature moves 2000 gallons a minute (120,000gph) when everything is flowing! The waterfall drops about 17' in total and the stream drops about 3' for a total of 20' of elevation change. There are koi, goldfish, and shubunkins in the pond! The pond is used for vineyard irrigation as well as aesthetics. This Photo by Dronesey https://www.facebook.com/Dronesey/?fref=ts

Los Angeles requires the incorporation of rain gardens (bioswales) in projects of this size. The Matloffs chose to nearly double the size of the required bioswale and to place it in the front garden, where they could harness its power to educate the neighborhood. Under the rocks at the center of this photo sit drains that both receive and direct water.

The removal of the dense and overgrown shrubs and trees provide more outdoor space for dining and entertaining, less maintenance. And now with site-appropriate plants and no lawn, a lower water bill for the homewoners. Full color Blue stone and small mexican pebbles replace the lawn and pathways while offering a contemporary transformation. A variety of low-water plants including succulents offer year-round appeal and interest throughout the seasons. Photos and Design © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

The decking is now slow-burning epay wood. When it does burn, it burns slowly, making it less likely to ignite the home. "Drought tolerant" Mediterranean plants were replaced with a mix of natives that better hold hydration and will "invade" nearby wildspaces. Readily visible here are Deer Grass, Purple Three Awn, and Cleveland Sage. Photo: Lesly Hall Photography

APLD 2021 Silver Award Winning Landscape Design. An expansive back yard landscape with several mature oak trees and a stunning Golden Locust tree has been transformed into a welcoming outdoor retreat. The renovations include a wraparound deck, an expansive travertine natural stone patio, stairways and pathways along with concrete retaining walls and column accents with dramatic planters. The pathways meander throughout the landscape... some with travertine stepping stones and gravel and those below the majestic oaks left natural with fallen leaves. Raised vegetable beds and fruit trees occupy some of the sunniest areas of the landscape. A variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants for both sunny and shady areas include several succulents, grasses, CA natives and other site-appropriate Mediterranean plants complimented by a variety of boulders. Dramatic white pots provide architectural accents, filled with succulents and citrus trees. Design, Photos, Drawings © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design
