House 19 Architect: Jestico + Whiles Client: Heinz Richardson Awards Won: RIBA South Award 2016 Photography Credit: Grant Smith House 19 is a two storey dwelling and by Using Shou Sugi Ban in multiple widths they have created a building which stands out for aesthetic detail rather than size. Incorporating corten steel around the windows and doors adds a contemporary vibe alongside detailed the flint work adding a traditionally local material to the exterior. Taking careful consideration with the impact of the building they reduced the height on the southern elevation to a single storey; this forms a very eccentric pitched roof. This has also been done to take full advantage of the photovoltaic cells; the integration of these is both subtle and elegant. This is a modest house that reflects the style and quality of the design. We worked with the Architect closely to achieve the finish they wanted with our bespoke Shou Sugi Ban. Enhanced Grain – Kyoka sa reta Kokumotsu was the chosen product allowing the effect of burnt timber aesthetics in terms of visual and textured appeal. When in reality this finish hasn’t yet seen a flame. venetia@exteriorsolutionsltd.co.uk www.shousugiban.co.uk 01494 291 033

Architect: Fergus Scott Architects Builder: ST & SG Booker Photography: MIchael Nicholson Photography. An extraordinary challenge confronted Fergus Scott when asked to design a house in an area marked for possible mine subsidence. A vast majority of land in the lower Hunter Valley region has been pronounced as an area in which mine subsidence may occur. To meet this obstruction, Fergus Scott designed a subtle, yet effectively engineered bird shaped house. His design consisted of a linear building pivoted from a fixed point at the centre of the house, the area used as an open planned kitchen and dining area. Remarkably this was the only section of the house with its structure securely fastened to the ground.

KIRKKIRK
Rosalie House by KIRK is located in one of Brisbane’s most established inner city suburbs. This 5-bedroom family home sits on a hillside among the peaks and gullies that characterises the suburb of Paddington. Rosalie House has a solid base that rises up as a 3-storey lightweight structure. The exterior is predominantly recycled Tallowwood weatherboard and pre-weathered zinc cladding – KIRK’s interpretation of the timber and tin tradition that is prevalent in the area. Sun-shading and privacy is achieved with operable timber screens and external venetian blinds that sit in front of a bespoke timber window joinery. The planning of the house is organised to address the views towards the city on the North-East and Mt Coot-tha on the South-West. The resulting building footprint provides private courtyards and landscaped terraces adjacent to the main living spaces. The interior is an ensemble of Red Mahogany timber flooring and Jarrah timber panelling on backdrop of white plaster walls and white-set ceilings. Environmental features of the house include solar hot water, 40,000L in-ground rainwater storage for landscape irrigation and low energy lighting. Photo Credits: Scott Burrows

A south facing extension has been built to convert a derelict Grade II listed barn into a sustainable, contemporary and comfortable home that invites natural light into the living spaces with glass extension to barn. Glovers Barn was a derelict 15th Century Grade II listed barn on the ‘Historic Buildings at Risk’ register in need of a complete barn renovation to transform it from a dark, constrained dwelling to an open, inviting and functional abode. Stamos Yeoh Architects thoughtfully designed a rear south west glass extension to barn with 20mm minimal sightline slim framed sliding glass doors to maximise the natural light ingress into the home. The flush thresholds enable easy access between the kitchen and external living spaces connecting to the mature gardens.

Intrim Group Pty LtdIntrim Group Pty Ltd
This beautifully designed home draws its interior inspiration from the Georgian style, strongly influenced by NeoClassical (classical Greek and Roman art and architecture) and Rococo (French curved and cockleshell style of design) styles. Every inch of the home has a unique detail, whether it be a custom timber moulding, an ornate skirting board, a different modern style door, detailed architraves and skirting blocks, pattern details in the wooden flooring or special ceiling treatment. This interior look was achieved using Intrim® SK452 architrave and skirting and Intrim® skirting blocks. Architrim exterior polyurethane finishings were applied around windows, sills and posts using profiles SK58, CR44, SN02, CM12 and custom cornerstones.
