log cabin mantel wall design Integrated Wall 2255.1 The skilled custom design cabinetmaker can help a small room with a fireplace to feel larger by simplifying details, and by limiting the number of disparate elements employed in the design. A wood storage room, and a general storage area are incorporated on either side of this fireplace, in a manner that expands, rather than interrupts, the limited wall surface. Restrained design makes the most of two storage opportunities, without disrupting the focal area of the room. The mantel is clean and a strong horizontal line helping to expand the visual width of the room. The renovation of this small log cabin was accomplished in collaboration with architect, Bethany Puopolo. A log cabin’s aesthetic requirements are best addressed through simple design motifs. Different styles of log structures suggest different possibilities. The eastern seaboard tradition of dovetailed, square log construction, offers us cabin interiors with a different feel than typically western, round log structures.

Creating comfort and a private space for each homeowner, the sitting room is a respite to read, work, write a letter, or run the house as a gateway space with visibility to the front entry and connection to the kitchen. Soffits ground the perimeter of the room and the shimmer of a patterned wall covering framed in the ceiling visually lowers the expansive heights. The layering of textures as a mix of patterns among the furnishings, pillows and rug is a notable British influence. Opposite the sofa, a television is concealed in built-in cabinets behind sliding panels with a decorative metal infill to maintain a formal appearance through the front facing picture window. Printed drapery frames the window bringing color and warmth to the room.

This tiny home is located on a treelined street in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver. We helped our client create a living and dining space with a beach vibe in this small front room that comfortably accommodates their growing family of four. The starting point for the decor was the client's treasured antique chaise (positioned under the large window) and the scheme grew from there. We employed a few important space saving techniques in this room... One is building seating into a corner that doubles as storage, the other is tucking a footstool, which can double as an extra seat, under the custom wood coffee table. The TV is carefully concealed in the custom millwork above the fireplace. Finally, we personalized this space by designing a family gallery wall that combines family photos and shadow boxes of treasured keepsakes. We did this library and screen room project, designed by Linton Architects in 2017. It features lots of bookshelf space, upper storage, a rolling library ladder and a retractable digital projector screen. Of particular note is the use of the space above the windows to house the screen and main speakers, which is enclosed by lift-up doors that have speaker grille cloth panels. I also made a Walnut library table to store the digital projector under a drop leaf.

The design promotes healthy lifestyles by providing primary living on one floor, no materials containing volatile organic compounds, energy recovery ventilation systems, radon elimination systems, extension of interior spaces into the natural environment of the site, strong and direct physical and visual connections to nature, daylighting techniques providing occupants full integration into a natural, endogenous circadian rhythm. Incorporation¬¬¬ of daylighting with clerestories and solar tubes reduce daytime lighting requirements. Ground source geothermal heat pumps and superior-to-code insulation ensure minimal space-conditioning costs. Corten steel siding and concrete foundation walls satisfy client requirements for low maintenance and durability. All lighting fixtures are LEDs.

Located in the desirable San Francisco Bay, CA this room is full of family memories. It blends European, Asian and African elements creating a rich and culturally diverse look. The client has lived in Spain for many years and wanted the room to be casual, comfortable with pops of color. They have traveled extensively throughout the world and collected a few furniture pieces, rug and home accessories that were required to be incorporated into the space. We decided to bring the most memorable elements and enhance the color scheme with bold, bright and soft hues of reds, yellows and grays. In the end, the room became a true reflection of the owners’ eclectic taste, personality and life history. The atmosphere is rustic, yet coexists harmoniously with some modern elements. An invitation to enjoy and relax just like when they were living in Spain. Photo by David Duncan Livingston
