The modern and functional vent is almost completely disguised in a soffit, and neatly trimed with Oak - no detail left out. Classic white cups and bowls are fetchingly displayed on antique oak floating shelves. Photos by Eric Roth

Stone Italiana benchtop and American oak cupboard facing a recessed dark stained jarrah provide a floating effect to the kitchen island. A mirror splashback under the perforated brass woven mesh doors above, adds depth to the kitchen. © Edward Birch

The simple doorstyle and finishes of the kitchen coordinate beautifully with the rich look of the hardwood floors, stairs, and living room furniture, for a transitional feel.

We were commissioned to transform a large run-down flat occupying the ground floor and basement of a grand house in Hampstead into a spectacular contemporary apartment. The property was originally built for a gentleman artist in the 1870s who installed various features including the gothic panelling and stained glass in the living room, acquired from a French church. Since its conversion into a boarding house soon after the First World War, and then flats in the 1960s, hardly any remedial work had been undertaken and the property was in a parlous state. The glow of the lantern-like foyer sets the tone for this urban contemporary home. This open floor plan invites entertaining on the main floor, with only ceiling transitions defining the living, dining, kitchen, and breakfast rooms. With viewable outdoor living and pool, extensive use of glass makes it seamless from inside to out. Form meets function in kitchens that have butcher block countertops by Williamsburg Butcher Block Company. The close grain provides a smooth surface, easily cleaned and cared for. American Cherry is best known for its use in cabinetry and fine furniture in North America. The classic luxury of this wood, as it deepens with age, is unrivaled by other domestic products and fits any décor. The heartwood is a combination of subtly blended red and brown tones providing a traditional elegance and class look to your kitchen or any other space.
