The 3 bathrooms in this 1970's house were in serious need of remodeling - as in gut and re-build - so the owners decided to have them all done at once and while at it, refinish the floors, refurnish the living room and furnish the new screen porch addition.
As a designer in a seasonal resort area, I am accustomed to working with my customers long distance. Using (and e-mailing) computer drafted renderings, product layout pages very professional builders, suppliers and steady communication, my client and I moved flawlessly through the challenges all remodel projects present.
My goal was to find fabrics and furnishings that reflected the home's original architectural Mid Century Modern integrity The house has very strong horizontal lines that I wanted to repeat in the furniture, bathroom fixtures, tile and light fixture selections.

Located on a beautiful property with a legacy of architectural and landscape innovation, this guest house was originally designed by the offices of Eliot Noyes and Alan Goldberg. Due to its age and expanded use as an in-law dwelling for extended stays, the 1200 sf structure required a renovation and small addition. While one objective was to make the structure function independently of the main house with its own access road, garage, and entrance, another objective was to knit the guest house into the architectural fabric of the property. New window openings deliberately frame landscape and architectural elements on the site, while exterior finishes borrow from that of the main house (cedar, zinc, field stone) bringing unity to the family compound. Inside, the use of lighter materials gives the simple, efficient spaces airiness.
A challenge was to find an interior design vocabulary which is both simple and clean, but not cold or uninteresting. A combination of rough slate, white washed oak, and high gloss lacquer cabinets provide interest and texture, but with their minimal detailing create a sense of calm.

Florals are always great additions to a modern farmhouse look. This framed wreath with the family's last initial was a nice added touch.

Family room and outdoor Loggia
Nestled among the citrus groves, olive trees, rolling foothills and lush fairways of Rancho Santa Fe is Casa Tramonto -- a Mediterranean-style estate for a multi-generational family. The home is laid out in a traditional U shape, providing maximum light and access to outdoor spaces. A separate courtyard connects to a guest house for an elder parent that now lives with the family, allowing proximity yet plenty of privacy for everyone.

The room is wrapped in an apple green paint and features white accent trim. The bright and bold patterns provide energy and a pair of striped chests flank the light blue sofa and provide more visual interest. The oversized ottoman acts not only as a coffee table but also provides extra seating and is on casters for easy movement. A green leather modern chrome chair adds more seating and interest while the shag rug adds more texture to this room.

Clay Squared to Infinity
The hearth corner used is mitered.
The Bowtie shape tile is the newest shape we have created. It is a simple shape but delivers a very mesmerizing look when multiples are put together. The homeowner used our Pesto glaze as the main color throughout the installation. With Quails Egg for an accent on the hearth. With the fireplace projecting a couple of inches from the wall the L trims were used to give it a frame. The fireplace has that modern and at the same time timeless feel to it.

Em the Gem
Our lovely repeat clients contracted J Hill Interiors to complete a great room in their Los Altos Hills home. The client wanted a fresh, bright and inviting look for a home where they entertain often and live casually. We pulled color inspiration from an existing art piece and used green and yellows to make the space more youthful.
