This charming soft gray kitchen with soaring 9 foot ceilings was a quick redo for a growing family moving from the city with a baby on the way! The kitchen flow was helped by the addition of an island, with hardworking Caesarstone countertops in Pebble give the warm feel of concrete. The classic modern design of this kitchen was planned for an active young family of four who uses the space as their central hub for gathering, eating and staying connected. Our goals were to create a beautiful and highly functional kitchen with an emphasis on cabinet organization, heated floors and incorporating a live edge slab countertop. We removed an existing bulky island and replaced it with a new island that while only 60 x 26 in size packs a powerful punch housing a baking center, trash/recycle center, microwave oven and cookbook storage. The island seemed the natural place for the gorgeous live edge slab coupled with vintage mercury glass light pendants that make for a truly stunning kitchen island. Polished carrara quartz perimeter counters pair beautifully with the watery blue-green glass backsplash tile. A message center conveniently located on a side panel of the refrigerator cabinet houses built in mailboxes, a family calendar and magnetic surface to display the children’s artwork. We are pleased to have met the family’s goals and that they love their kitchen. Design mission accomplished!

In this after photo, a counter depth refrigerator is located where the range once was, with a full length pantry. The counter on the right is convenient to land food in and out of the refrigerator. All the lower cabinets are drawers. Designer Julia Kleyman specified hardware on the large drawers be mounted at the top to avoid unnecessary bending. The old phone was kept for convenience. The original door was cut in half and retrofitted to act like a gate to confine a dog from the rest of the house.

This remodel of a mid century gem is located in the town of Lincoln, MA a hot bed of modernist homes inspired by Gropius’ own house built nearby in the 1940’s. By the time the house was built, modernism had evolved from the Gropius era, to incorporate the rural vibe of Lincoln with spectacular exposed wooden beams and deep overhangs.
The design rejects the traditional New England house with its enclosing wall and inward posture. The low pitched roofs, open floor plan, and large windows openings connect the house to nature to make the most of its rural setting.

The crisp white handleless cabinets are paired with a dark beautifully patterned Caesarstone called Vanilla Noir. This remodel required a plan to maintain its original character and charm while updating and modernizing the kitchen. These original custom cabinets on top of the brick backsplash brought so much character to the kitchen, the client did not want to see them go. Revitalized with fresh paint and new hardware, these cabinets received a subtle yet fresh facelift. The peninsula was updated with industrial legs and laminate countertops that match the rest of the kitchen. With the distressed wood floors bringing it all together, this small remodel brought about a big change.

When selling your home, It can be a mistake to rip out an original kitchen or bathroom if it is in good condition, has all the mod cons people expect and can showcase the potential for future adaptation or renovations. This kitchen had been previously updated in the 1970s - as in wood grain bench tops and brown wall tiles - but had great storage, and the potential for further floor space by closing off two of the four doors into the room. So instead of demolishing and starting over, extra space was created for a dishwasher and open shelving for vintage kitchenalia to be displayed, new "retro" wall tiles, a vintage double sink, tapware, new bench tops and handles were added to bring back that cheery 1950s feel, while also improving function.
Result? A kitchen that sold the house to some young mid century enthusiasts!
