An eclectic and sophisticated kaleidoscope of experiences provide an entertainer’s retreat from the urban surroundings. Fuelled by the dream of two inspiring clients to create an industrial warehouse space that was to be designed around their particular needs, we went on an amazing journey that culminated in a unique and exciting result. The unusual layout is particular to the clients’ brief whereby a central courtyard is surrounded by the entertainment functions, whilst the living and bedroom spaces are located on the perimeter for access to the city and harbour views. The generous living spaces can be opened to flow seamlessly from one to the other, but can also be closed off to provide intimate, cosy areas for reflection. With the inclusion of materials such as recycled face-brick, steel, timber and concrete, the main living spaces are rich and vibrant. The bedrooms, however, have a quieter palette providing the inhabitants a variety of experiences as they move through the spaces.

With its gabled rectangular form and black iron cladding, this clever new build makes a striking statement yet complements its natural environment. Internally, the house has been lined in chipboard with negative detailing. Polished concrete floors not only look stylish but absorb the sunlight that floods in, keeping the north-facing home warm. The bathroom also features chipboard and two windows to capture the outlook. One of these is positioned at the end of the shower to bring the rural views inside. Floor-to-ceiling dark tiles in the shower alcove make a stunning contrast to the wood. Made on-site, the concrete vanity benchtops match the imported bathtub and vanity bowls. Doors from each of the four bedrooms open to their own exposed aggregate terrace, landscaped with plants and boulders. Attached to the custom kitchen island is a lowered dining area, continuing the chipboard theme. The cabinets and benchtops match those in the bathrooms and contrast with the rest of the open-plan space. A lot has been achieved in this home on a tight budget.

We took a small damp basement bathroom and flooded it with light. The client did not want a full wall of tile so we used teak to create a focal point for the mirror and sink. It brings warmth to the space.

I custom designed this vanity out of zinc and wood. I wanted it to be space saving and float off of the floor. The tub and shower area are combined to create a wet room. the overhead rain shower and wall mounted fixtures provide a spa-like experience. Photo: Seth Caplan

Custom concrete sink and vanity for kids bunk room. The concrete trough sink has a stepped front to make it easier for smaller kids to reach the sink. The vanity base also has pull out steps that are built into the toe-kick for smaller children. The vanity base is hand-crafted with a patinaed steel face frame and drawer fronts with reclaimed oak used throughout. The shelving also has a false back to hide the plumbing from curious kids. Photo by Alan Tansey This East Village penthouse was designed for nocturnal entertaining. Reclaimed wood lines the walls and counters of the kitchen and dark tones accent the different spaces of the apartment. Brick walls were exposed and the stair was stripped to its raw steel finish. The guest bath shower is lined with textured slate while the floor is clad in striped Moroccan tile.
