Needless to say, this kitchen is a cook’s dream. With an oversized peninsula, there is plenty of space to create tasteful confections. They added another element of interest to their design by mitering the edges of their countertop, creating the look of a thicker slab and adding a nice focal point to the space. Pulling the whole look together, they complemented the sea pearl quartzite countertop beautifully with the use of grey subway tile. Cabinets were custom built by Chandler in a shaker style with narrow 2" recessed panel and painted in a sherwin williams paint called silverplate in eggshell finish. The hardware was ordered through topknobs in the pennington style, various sizes used.

Download our free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   This client was referred to us from a past client. They are a busy 2-career household with young children and enjoy entertaining friends and family in their home. They have a beautiful open concept home but unfortunately the kitchen was not fitting for the rest of the home. They were not quite sure what to do with the space. We talked about trying to refresh it or do more of a minor remodel, but in the end they decided a full gut would get them to where they wanted to be. One problem was there was no place for guests to hang out other than the large and awkward banquette area. The brick wall and tiled hood area were feeling a bit dated and tired. The space was just not functional for their lifestyle. There was no prep space near the cooktop and no landing area for items coming out of the ovens or refrigerator, plus a big dead zone in the center of the room. Banquettes, like the one they previously had in the space, are great for small spaces, but when they get really large like this one, it makes getting in and out of the seating area awkward and uncomfortable. Plus, there was room for a large table, so we eliminated the awkward built in. We started by removing the faux brick wall between the kitchen and back entry. We relocated the entry to the garage over a couple feet in order to get every last inch out of the new kitchen. We also made the decision to close up the primary window that faced the pretty ho hum brick wall of the neighbor’s house. There was plenty of light coming in from the seating area, so we just didn’t feel the window was adding much to the room. Construction went smoothy. There was a bit of rework with electrical, flooring and HVAC, but in the end, we think it was well worth it. The clients really wanted a sleek contemporary look, and we originally had planned for a full height slab backsplash, but due to it’s size, it was a budget buster. Instead, we got creative and settled on large format porcelain tiles that have a similar feel but were a fraction of the cost. We made sure the wall was plumb and level so that the fit and finish would mimic that of slab material. The final space was quite a change. A large prep sink sits directly across from the new pro-style range with plenty additional prep space on the large island. The refrigerator and ovens now have miles of landing space, and a nice tight work triangle makes cooking a breeze. Since we wanted a more contemporary feel, not many wall cabinets were included. Instead, we outfitted some of the drawers for dish storage with a peg system. Two large pantries flanking the refrigerator hold baking supplies and small appliances. Large drawers by the cooktop hold pots and pans, and an appliance garage tucked away to the left of the range hides away miscellaneous items. The large island also houses a microwave drawer and tons of storage, most of which is drawers offering maximum convenience. The island now seats 5-6 people comfortably along with the new table in the seating area which can seat up to 8. Entertaining will be a breeze in this space. With such a clean backdrop, we knew we would need some drama with the lighting, so we chose two sets of staggered pendants, which we adjusted for the right visual balance above the island. We also included a small coffee station to the right of the main kitchen, which helps keep the coffee clutter out of the kitchen proper. Two tones of complimentary gray are featured in this kitchen. The perimeter is a light gray that reads almost white. The island is a gray stain that adds some depth and interest with the visible wood texture. The countertops are clean white quartz, and the hardware, barstools and light fixtures add warm brass tones. I see lots of cooking and entertaining with family and friends in the near future in this bright and airy new space. We designed a custom hutch which has a multitude of storage options and functionality – open display shelves, roll-outs, drawers, extra counter/serving space, as well as a beverage fridge and appliance garage/coffee center. On the opposite side of the kitchen, we replaced a small pantry closet with a furniture style built-in that took advantage of underutilized space. Anticipating issues with supply chain, we opted to use a local cabinet maker on this project which allowed us to fully customize the cabinets for optimal functionality.

Our client chose platinum blue matt and oak effect cashmere grey doors to help create a bright airy space. Clever storage solutions were key to this design, as we tried to come up with many storage options to help with the family's needs. The long, island is a bold statement within the room, as the two separate islands are connected by a simple, solid wood worktop, making the design unique. The mix-match of colours and materials work really well within the space and really show off the clients personality.

The kitchen is so often the heart of the home, but add a large island unit as a central focus and this is a room that becomes the hub of all the action, from breakfast and lunch to dinner and beyond. That’s why CRL Quartz Sahara was the surface of choice for this busy family kitchen, where the large, open-plan space takes on a multi-functional role within the home. With the homeowners keen to include an island complete with breakfast bar within the room’s design as the perfect spot for food prep, home working, dining and socialising, designers Coton Interiors recommended a trip to Intamarble in Staffordshire. Here the family could see first-hand the array of CRL Quartz surfaces available, selecting Sahara as the perfect fit for their décor plans. Sahara has an earthy base colour, complemented with a subtle grey veining, along with lighter grey and white flecks giving it a sense of character and warmth. The neutral colourway makes it ideal for combining with darker and bolder colours elsewhere to create a contemporary two-tone effect. Chosen for the worktops and wall cladding, Sahara matches the kitchen’s colour palette perfectly. Delivered in one piece, the cladding is seam-free with no need for grout lines even over large areas. In the finished open-plan kitchen and dining area, guests are greeted by a bar area complete with wine cooler perfect for entertaining at home. A glass display unit and full wall cladding with CRL Quartz sits between the cupboards, while on the left-hand side a large bank of units solves the family’s storage dilemmas and creates a streamlined impression. Turn the corner to find the island unit, measuring an impressive 2.4m long. Complete with seating area and a modern sbox plug and charging port, this is a multi-functional surface intended for use for cooking, dining, working and relaxing As a stain, heat and scratch resistant surface CRL Quartz is highly durable and simple to care for, with none of the maintenance issues often associated with natural materials and concrete, but with all the aesthetic appeal. With no requirement for sealing and just a wipe with a soft damp cloth and mild detergent all that is needed to keep the surface looking its best, Sahara is perfectly suited for the busiest of areas. Fitting the lifestyle of a thoroughly modern family to perfection, this space at the heart of the home is now the ideal space for hosting.

This inset Shaker kitchen has a very calming colour scheme, with the kitchen cabinetry painted in Slaked Lime Deep by Little Greene and the island in Pompeian Ash. The wooden floor compliments the colours beautifully as do the other touches in the room. The brass inset handles tie in with other small brass details, such as in the bar stools and lampshade.
