Underpinning our design notions and considerations for this home were two instinctual ideas: that of our client’s fondness for ‘Old Be-al’ and associated desire for an enhanced connection between the house and the old-growth eucalypt landscape; and our own determined appreciation for the house’s original brickwork, something we hoped to celebrate and re-cast within the existing dwelling.
While considering the client’s brief of a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house, our design managed to reduce the overall footprint of the house and provide generous flowing living spaces with deep connection to the natural suburban landscape and the heritage of the existing house.
The reference to Old Be-al is constantly reinforced within the detailed design. The custom-made entry light mimics its branches, as does the pulls on the joinery and even the custom towel rails in the bathroom. The dynamically angled ceiling of rhythmically spaced timber cross-beams that extend out to an expansive timber decking are in dialogue with the upper canopy of the surrounding trees. The rhythm of the bushland also finds expression in vertical mullions and horizontal bracing beams, reminiscent of both the trunks and the canopies of the adjacent trees.

Beginning with a podium-like form, Shearwater House subtly peaks above the sand dunes and low-line shrubbery. To help soften the elevated silhouette, mirrored curves were introduced within the roof line and ground floor brickwork.
Upstairs, priority is given to the beach view, with expansive living areas and floor to ceiling windows to the north and east. Throughout the interior native timbers provide further context within the surrounding shack environment.

Beautiful light and bright open kitchen with a coastal feel. An amazing transformation from a 25+ year old all timber kitchen which made the space feel dark and closed in.

When the collaboration between client, builder and cabinet maker comes together perfectly the end result is one we are all very proud of. The clients had many ideas which evolved as the project was taking shape and as the budget changed. Through hours of planning and preparation the end result was to achieve the level of design and finishes that the client, builder and cabinet expect without making sacrifices or going over budget. Soft Matt finishes, solid timber, stone, brass tones, porcelain, feature bathroom fixtures and high end appliances all come together to create a warm, homely and sophisticated finish. The idea was to create spaces that you can relax in, work from, entertain in and most importantly raise your young family in. This project was fantastic to work on and the result shows that why would you ever want to leave home?

The beautifully warm and organic feel of Laminex "Possum Natural" cabinets teamed with the natural birchply open shelving and birch edged benchtop make this tight kitchen space a warm and styled place. Also totally loving the white appliances and sink that brighten up the space.

The kitchen performs double-duty with laundry functions under the breakfast bar bench as well as kitchen storage. Broom and pantry storage sit hidden behind minimalist cabinetry. Our goal was to maximise storage and bench space while keeping everything open and airy. The white cabinetry was a deliberate choice to reduce the bulk of so much storage in a smaller space.
New insulation (to ceilings, walls and under the floors), European uPVC windows and energy efficient blinds hugely increased the sustainability of the house. A cold, draughty house became warm, inviting and cheaper to heat and cool.

Our customers were wanting to modernise and lighten up their home when they contacted us. Their old kitchen was very closed in and dark, it didn't flow well with a wrap around upstanding bench top, and was in need of a real makeover! Our talented designer Rowena created a welcoming kitchen for the family that flows well with the living areas of the home. It's a social space where multiple people can easily work at the same time, and enjoy each other's company. The kitchen is beautiful and practical, and the island gives the kitchen plenty of bench space. The new design floods the kitchen with natural light and really makes it feel like the heart of the home.
Our customer was embarking on a complete renovation of his 1920s bungalow when he contacted Kitchen Mania. The previous kitchen was a 90's era L shaped kitchen that lacked flow and functionality. Our customer was having real difficulty figuring out a more user-friendly design for the space, even after consulting many family and friends for advice and ideas. Our talented designer, Mark reconfigured the kitchen to create a space that flows well, has great functionality and more usable bench space. He created a kitchen that has become the heart of the living space and is sympathetic to the character of the home. We were able to incorporate wood paneling into the bar back, a request from the owner that we think looks beautiful. We cleaned up the pantry and laundry area, creating more storage and functionality and we love our customer's addition of painted wood paneling in the laundry, that ties in nicely with other parts of the home.
