A new house in Wombat, near Young in regional NSW, utilises a simple linear plan to respond to the site. Facing due north and using a palette of robust, economical materials, the building is carefully assembled to accommodate a young family. Modest in size and budget, this building celebrates its place and the horizontality of the landscape.
This contemporary kitchen plays with colour and texture, featuring a bronze fish scale tile, contrasted with a statement navy blue tongue & groove patterned island.
The kitchen was relocated from one side to another at the back of the client’s home, stairs were moved and the placement of the new kitchen where existing skylights where housed added more light to the space. A mixture of white and grey tones were used throughout this space. The island was the feature of this kitchen, the grey stone wrapped around the island with a floating element and a waterfall end, this would be an area where the whole family could congregate and become a stand out feature to the space. A mirrored splashback on the back wall opened the kitchen up further with simple grey cabinetry to complement a modern look to the space. Tall Cabinetry housed a pantry, an oven tower and integrated fridge also. The Laundry was also thought of with the same tiles used in the Main Bathroom continued into this space and new cabinetry.

Two different architectural styles have come together with this project, and enhances the marriage between traditional and modern design. From the front of the home Californian Bungalow, it’s a feeling of charm and tradition. Although once you step into the hallway, there’s a transition from charming to contemporary. The owners have successfully created a stunningly modern white cube addition connected to the existing traditional bungalow by a glass, concrete and steel suspending bridge. The interior architectural qualities include a double height void, sculptural steel stair, two-storey sandstone wall and model train room requested by the train engineer client. This renovation is a celebration of tradition and contemporary design.
