Wood siding of the exterior wraps into the house at the south end of the kitchen concealing a pantry and panel-ready column, FIsher&Paykel refrigerator and freezer as well as a coffee bar. An assemblage of textures and raw materials including a dark-hued, minimalist layout for the kitchen opens to living room with panoramic views of the canyon to the left and the street on the right. We dropped the kitchen ceiling to be lower than the living room by 24 inches. There is a roof garden of meadow grasses and agave above the kitchen which thermally insulates cooling the kitchen space. Soapstone counter top, backsplash and shelf/window sill, Brizo faucet with Farrow & Ball "Pitch Black" painted cabinets complete the edges. The smooth stucco of the exterior walls and roof overhang wraps inside to the ceiling passing the wide screen windows facing the street. An American black walnut island with Fyrn counter stools separate the kitchen and living room over a floor of black, irregular-shaped flagstone. Delta Light fixtures were used throughout for their discreet beauty yet highly functional settings.

The 800 square-foot guest cottage is located on the footprint of a slightly smaller original cottage that was built three generations ago. With a failing structural system, the existing cottage had a very low sloping roof, did not provide for a lot of natural light and was not energy efficient. Utilizing high performing windows, doors and insulation, a total transformation of the structure occurred. A combination of clapboard and shingle siding, with standout touches of modern elegance, welcomes guests to their cozy retreat. The cottage consists of the main living area, a small galley style kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom and sleeping loft above. The loft construction was a timber frame system utilizing recycled timbers from the Balsams Resort in northern New Hampshire. The stones for the front steps and hearth of the fireplace came from the existing cottage’s granite chimney. Stylistically, the design is a mix of both a “Cottage” style of architecture with some clean and simple “Tech” style features, such as the air-craft cable and metal railing system. The color red was used as a highlight feature, accentuated on the shed dormer window exterior frames, the vintage looking range, the sliding doors and other interior elements. The client of this kitchen renovation is an accomplished amateur chef that wanted the microwave, refrigerator, and other appliances to be located at the fringes of the kitchen. Other "must haves" included a prep sink with no obstructions on the work surface and the ability to easily entertain outdoors. The silky surface of the soapstone countertops establishes a color and material pallet that feels warm and inviting. The slate floor, wood-fired pizza oven and unlacquered brass fixtures will age gracefully, taking a warm patina over time.

A streamlined countertop hutch, featuring sleek black metal doors, offers convenient storage for dishware, kitchen necessities, and decor. Integrated lighting elegantly illuminates the items on the shelves, making it an inviting display. The bold black metal doors create a striking contrast against the warm white and stained white oak cabinetry. The focus of the countertop hutch design was to create a practical grab-and-go storage solution, with the powder-coated metal doors taking center stage.

The kitchen's perimeter features dark soapstone counters that strike a beautiful contrast to the custom-mushroom- colored cabinets. A large window flanked by antique brass sconces bathes the room in natural light. Hand-made 4 x4 Zelliage tile hung in a running bond pattern plays sweet homage to the 1950's era of the home. Butcher block counters create a hard-working bar area.

Antique table in a tall white pantry with a rolling ladder and antique light fixture. A clean, contemporary white palette in this traditional Spanish Style home in Santa Barbara, California. Soft greys, beige, cream colored fabrics, hand knotted rugs and quiet light walls show off the beautiful thick arches between the living room and dining room. Stained wood beams, wrought iron lighting, and carved limestone fireplaces give a soft, comfortable feel for this summer home by the Pacific Ocean. White linen drapes with grass shades give warmth and texture to the great room. The kitchen features glass and white marble mosaic backsplash, white slabs of natural quartzite, and a built in banquet nook. The oak cabinets are lightened by a white wash over the stained wood, and medium brown wood plank flooring througout the home. Project Location: Santa Barbara, California. Project designed by Maraya Interior Design. From their beautiful resort town of Ojai, they serve clients in Montecito, Hope Ranch, Malibu, Westlake and Calabasas, across the tri-county areas of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles, south to Hidden Hills- north through Solvang and more.
