Luxury and 'man-cave-feeling' custom bar within basement of luxury new home build

Behind the rolling hills of Arthurs Seat sits “The Farm”, a coastal getaway and future permanent residence for our clients. The modest three bedroom brick home will be renovated and a substantial extension added. The footprint of the extension re-aligns to face the beautiful landscape of the western valley and dam. The new living and dining rooms open onto an entertaining terrace. The distinct roof form of valleys and ridges relate in level to the existing roof for continuation of scale. The new roof cantilevers beyond the extension walls creating emphasis and direction towards the natural views.

Blue Hour

The "blue hour" is that magical time of day when sunlight scatters and the sky becomes a deep shade of blue. For this Mediterranean-style Sea Cliff home from the 1920s, we took our design inspiration from the twilight period that inspired artists and photographers. The living room features moody blues and neutral shades on the main floor. We selected contemporary furnishings and modern art for this active family of five. Upstairs are the bedrooms and a home office, while downstairs, a media room, and wine cellar provide a place for adults and young children to relax and play.

Warm Traditional With Bold Accents

Our St. Pete studio gave this beautiful traditional home a warm, welcoming ambience with bold accents and decor. Gray and white wallpaper perfectly frame the large windows in the living room, and the elegant furnishings add elegance and classiness to the space. The bedrooms are also styled with wallpaper that leaves a calm, soothing feel for instant relaxation. Fun prints and patterns add cheerfulness to the bedrooms, making them a private and personal space to hang out. This 1980s house underwent a significant renovation to modernize its spaces, and to make it more conducive to casual entertaining. The living/dining room was made warmer and more inviting with custom lighting fixtures, sheer draperies and built-in bookcases. Also, a glass and walnut screen replaced a solid wall to open the room to the adjoining kitchen/bar area. The kitchen was significantly enlarged and reconfigured, and a dark hallway was opened up and transformed to a wet bar. The upstairs floor was converted to a large master suite with three walk-in closets, a luxurious bathroom with soaking tub and two-person shower, and a private outdoor balcony. This "rec room" is party central at this palatial manner, right down to the gallon sized bottle of Grey Goose and martini glasses. Of course, one has to have full control over one's surroundings, so La Scala has the sound, video, lighting, fire, and more under it's control. Even the fridges are monitored for just the right temperature, along with the room environment, using either the touch screen on the bar or by iphone/ipad. Just like in the restaurant fridges we monitor, if the temperature goes too low, the owner is notified (if he wants to be). Party on!

What type of home bar is best suited to your needs?

Home bars come in all shapes and sizes, and with an array of practicalities. Utilise an awkward corner with a cabinet bar; maximise floor space with a trunk bar, which unfolds to create a bar counter; or conveniently turn any space in your house into a bar room with a mobile bar such as a fun bar cart. If you prefer a more grandiose option, or all the amenities of a real bar, you can’t go past a built-in contemporary home bar.

What home bar functionalities do you want to include?

Decide how you will use the bar and whether you will need sinks, storage and refrigeration. Including a sink in your contemporary home bar design is a practical addition if you choose a location far from your kitchen. If you’re a wine connoisseur, you may want to include additional wine storage, whereas a mini bar fridge within the kitchen may need no extra storage at all. Home bars that will be used infrequently – perhaps an outdoor bar in the cooler months – may not need refrigeration and could suffice with large ice buckets.

What bar furniture will you need?

Seating is essential to any home bar and will impact the style of your home bar design. How can you personalise your bar design?

Bar tools and accessories are an easy and interchangeable way to personalise your bar design. You may want to create a wine bar, tavern-style bar or retro bar, so look for wine glasses and tumblers, for instance, that will help carry this style. Coasters, bar mats or signage will help you to further achieve your desired look.
