I love seeing a house go up from the blueprints to the end of the build. It is always a journey filled with a thousand decisions, some creative on-the-spot thinking and yes, usually a few stressful moments. This Naperville project was a collaboration with a local builder and architect. The Kitchen Studio collaborated by completing the cabinetry design and final layout for the entire home. In the basement, we carried the warm gray tones into a custom bar, featuring a 90” wide beverage center from True Appliances. The glass shelving in the open cabinets and the antique mirror give the area a modern twist on a classic pub style bar. A DEANE client returned in 2022 for an update to their kitchen remodel project from 2006. This incredible transformation was driven by the desire to create a glamorous space for entertaining. Taking the space that used to be an office, walls were taken down to allow the new bar and tasting table to be integrated into the kitchen and living area. A climate-controlled glass wine cabinet with knurled brass handles elegantly displays bottles and defines the space while still allowing it to feel light and airy. The bar boasts door-style “wave” cabinets in high-gloss black lacquer that seamlessly conceal beverage and bottle storage drawers and an ice maker. The open shelving with integrated LED lighting and satin brass edging anchor the marble countertop.

36" SubZero Pro Refrigerator anchors one end of the back wall of this basement bar. The other side is a hidden pantry cabinet. The wall cabinets were brought down the countertop and include glass doors and glass shelves. Glass shelves span the width between the cabients and sit in front of a back lit glass panel that adds to the ambiance of the bar. Undercounter wine refrigerators were incorporated on the back wall as well.

We took out an office in opening up the floor plan of this renovation. We designed this home bar complete with sink and beverage fridge which serves guests in the family room and living room. The mother of pearl penny round backsplash catches the light and echoes the coastal theme.

This 5466 SF custom home sits high on a bluff overlooking the St Johns River with wide views of downtown Jacksonville. The home includes five bedrooms, five and a half baths, formal living and dining rooms, a large study and theatre. An extensive rear lanai with outdoor kitchen and balcony take advantage of the riverfront views. A two-story great room with demonstration kitchen featuring Miele appliances is the central core of the home.

Sarah was inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1920s to create life in this area. Iron, aluminum, lacquered wood, leather, and vintage mirrors are some of the vintage materials chosen for the bar, completely designed by Sarah and produced in Germany by artisans. Black and brown zigzagged rugs perfectly compliment the more modern elements of this space, such as the angular pool table and the fierce photography display of “The Woman on Fire” by Guido Argentini.

An island was incorporated in this basement bar. Access to the pool is on the right side and the entertaining space is the left. The island allowed for more storage, raised seating, and access from either the entertaining space or the pool with ease. Dark stained maple cabinets were used with a white quartz countertop. Polished chrome hardware was added and the contrast is striking. A pantry was incorporated on the right side for snack storage.

Where should you position your home bar?

The most popular location for a home bar is in or near the kitchen or dining room. If you prefer entertaining outdoors, however, an outdoor bar can be a dream addition to any Aussie backyard – and imagine the luxury of swimming up to your very own pool bar! If you're building from scratch, a landscape architect can help you work out the ideal design for your space.

What type of home bar is best suited to your needs?

Home bars come in all shapes and sizes, and with an array of practicalities. Utilise an awkward corner with a cabinet bar; maximise floor space with a trunk bar, which unfolds to create a bar counter; or conveniently turn any space in your house into a bar room with a mobile bar such as a fun bar cart. If you prefer a more grandiose option, or all the amenities of a real bar, you can’t go past a built-in home bar.

What home bar functionalities do you want to include?

Decide how you will use the bar and whether you will need sinks, storage and refrigeration. Including a sink in your home bar design is a practical addition if you choose a location far from your kitchen. If you’re a wine connoisseur, you may want to include additional wine storage, whereas a mini bar fridge within the kitchen may need no extra storage at all. Home bars that will be used infrequently – perhaps an outdoor bar in the cooler months – may not need refrigeration and could suffice with large ice buckets.

What bar furniture will you need?

Seating is essential to any home bar and will impact the style of your home bar design. Bar stools, for example, come in an array of materials and styles, from traditional wooden bar stools, to resort- and industrial-style stools. Storage is another important element, so look for a liquor cabinet and wine racks. Next, if you are creating a freestanding station, you will need a bar table, which are taller and shallower than regular dining tables. Check that your stools and table height work together before you finalise any home bar designs.

How can you personalise your bar design?

Bar tools and accessories are an easy and interchangeable way to personalise your bar design. You may want to create a wine bar, tavern-style bar or retro bar, so look for wine glasses and tumblers, for instance, that will help carry this style. Coasters, bar mats or signage will help you to further achieve your desired look.
