The home sits into an extremely steep, half-acre lot that shares a property line with a ski resort and allows for ski-in, ski-out access to the mountain’s 61 trails. This unique location and challenging terrain informed the home’s siting, footprint, program, design, interior design, finishes, and custom made furniture. They came in with a couple of sets of drawings from different architects that were not quite what they were looking for, so we set out to really listen and try to provide a design that would meet their objectives given what the space could offer. We started by agreeing that a bump out was the best way to go and then decided on the size and the floor plan locations of the mudroom, powder room and butler pantry which were all part of the project. We also planned for an eat-in banquette that is neatly tucked into the corner and surrounded by windows providing a lovely spot for daily meals. The kitchen itself is L-shaped with the refrigerator and range along one wall, and the new sink along the exterior wall with a large window overlooking the backyard. A large island, with seating for five, houses a prep sink and microwave. A new opening space between the kitchen and dining room includes a butler pantry/bar in one section and a large kitchen pantry in the other. Through the door to the left of the main sink is access to the new mudroom and powder room and existing attached garage. White inset cabinets, quartzite countertops, subway tile and nickel accents provide a traditional feel. The gray island is a needed contrast to the dark wood flooring. Last but not least, professional appliances provide the tools of the trade needed to make this one hardworking kitchen. This custom built Mission style home, set high on a cliff overlooking the Long Island Sound, features beautifully designed interior spaces, to reflect it's architecture. These wonderful homeowners' turned to Lakeville Kitchen Designer, Kathleen Fredrich, to help them bring their dream kitchen to life. Evidence of classic Mission style are incorporated in the island , on the hood and in the columns of the room divide. We selected Buckingham, by Cambria, a Quartz material, for the counter tops, to create a warm blend of the painted and the cherry wood cabinetry. Twisted oil rubbed bronze hardware, by Top Knobs, and lighting fixtures by Hubbardton Forge, add a subtle accent to the gourmet stainless steel 48" Wolf Range.

We opened this kitchen to a family room which we remodeled, gave the clients a new mudroom, sunroom, new screened room and kitchenette to be used when poolside. The style is a casual yet traditional kitchen featuring white cabinets, quartz counters and a designer glass backsplash. The use of weathered natural materials and blue/grey island creates a softness and yields a more livable space which can be hard to achieve with the use of white cabinetry alone. Their professional appliances and built-in appliance garage make this kitchen extremely functional for even the best of cooks. Finishing touches such as the fireclay farmhouse sink, the hand-hammered bar sink and a touch of crystal in the sconces provide just the right amount of sparkle.

The steps leading to the kitchen from the side door were reoriented and turned in the opposite direction. This change created an opportunity for a large walk in pantry and helped to better define the flow through the space. The clean-up area is located in a more private area of the space so that dirty dishes following a party could be stacked out of sight. Slab wood veneer doors in a textured gloss finish are framed by pilasters forming a cohesive furniture concept throughout the design. 1. What Makes a Good Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage?
