For this mudroom remodel the homeowners came in to Dillman & Upton frustrated with their current, small and very tight, laundry room. They were in need of more space and functional storage and asked if I could help them out. Once at the job site I found that adjacent to the the current laundry room was an inefficient walk in closet. After discussing their options we decided to remove the wall between the two rooms and create a full mudroom with ample storage and plenty of room to comfortably manage the laundry. A large laundry room that is combined with a craft space designed to inspire young minds and to make laundry time fun with the vibrant teal glass tiles. Lots of counterspace for sorting and folding laundry and a deep sink that is great for hand washing. Ample cabinet space for all the laundry supplies and for all of the arts and craft supplies. On the floor is a wood looking porcelain tile that is used throughout most of the home.

This mud room is either entered via the mud room entry from the garage or through the glass exterior door. A large cabinetry coat closet flanks an expansive bench seat with drawer storage below for shoes. Floating shelves provide ample storage for small gardening items, hats and gloves. The bench seat upholstery adds warmth, comfort and a splash of color to the space. Stacked laundry behind retractable doors and a large folding counter completes the picture!

The vanity top and the washer/dryer counter are both made from an IKEA butcher block table top that I was able to cut into the custom sizes for the space. I learned alot about polyurethane and felt a little like the Karate Kid, poly on, sand off, poly on, sand off. The counter does have a leg on the front left for support. This arrangement allowed for a small hangar bar and 4" space to keep brooms, swifter, and even a small step stool to reach the upper most cabinet space. Not saying I'm short, but I will admint that I could use a little vertical help sometimes, but I am not short.

Floor to ceiling cabinetry conceals all laundry room necessities along with shelving space for extra towels, hanging rods for drying clothes, a custom made ironing board slot, pantry space for the mop and vacuum, and more storage for other cleaning supplies. Our client approached us while he was in the process of purchasing his ½ lot detached unit in Hermosa Beach. He was drawn to a design / build approach because although he has great design taste, as a busy professional he didn’t have the time or energy to manage every detail involved in a home remodel. The property had been used as a rental unit and was in need of TLC. By bringing us onto the project during the purchase we were able to help assess the true condition of the home. Built in 1976, the 894 sq. ft. home had extensive termite and dry rot damage from years of neglect. The project required us to reframe the home from the inside out. To design a space that your client will love you really need to spend time getting to know them. Our client enjoys entertaining small groups. He has a custom turntable and considers himself a mixologist. We opened up the space, space-planning for his custom turntable, to make it ideal for entertaining. The wood floor is reclaimed wood from manufacturing facilities. The reframing work also allowed us to make the roof a deck with an ocean view. The home is now a blend of the latest design trends and vintage elements and our client couldn’t be happier! This laundry room features a modern cement plaster on the walls, which the homeowner wanted to preserve and show off. Normandy Designer Kathryn O'Donovan added open shelving with exposed brackets to create the overall industrial look of the room.
