Custom Design & Construction
Our homeowners approached us for design help shortly after purchasing a fixer upper. They wanted to redesign the home into an open concept plan. Their goal was something that would serve multiple functions: allow them to entertain small groups while accommodating their two small children not only now but into the future as they grow up and have social lives of their own. They wanted the kitchen opened up to the living room to create a Great Room. The living room was also in need of an update including the bulky, existing brick fireplace. They were interested in an aesthetic that would have a mid-century flair with a modern layout. We added built-in cabinetry on either side of the fireplace mimicking the wood and stain color true to the era. The adjacent Family Room, needed minor updates to carry the mid-century flavor throughout.

Two proportioned book shelves flank either side of this updated fireplace. Their graceful arches echo the relief patterns on the tile façade. This simple but elegant update has provided cabinetry for concealed storage and open shelving where the owner proudly displays their favorite novels, travel mementos, and family heirlooms, adding a touch of personal narrative to the space.

Feature wall that beautifully fulfils the Client Brief checklist!
Notice the seamless integration of the aircon grill with custom-designed slots, the layered geometry, and the practical addition of display shelves—a thoughtful design touch!
Here's a pro tip: While we generally advise against placing a TV above the fireplace due to the viewing angle, there are exceptions, such as when it's rarely used, as in this case.

We installed wood ceilings drenched in a dark walnut stain to compliment the hand packed Saltillo tiles imported from Mexico.

The first step in this living room update was to replace the dated mantel with a new soapstone fireplace surround.
We added modern shiplap for visual interest.
Because our clients like to entertain, we removed the dated built-ins beside the fireplace and added a bench to provide extra seating. We used performance fabrics throughout to make it family and pet-friendly.

This stunning modern-inspired fireplace is truly a focal point. Clad in Porcelenosa geometric tile, teh custom walnut millwork and concrete hearth add rich depth to the space. The angles in the ceiling and tile are also subtly repeated in the ottoman vinyl by Kravet. And who doesn't love a purple sofa? Photo by David Sparks.
