Rustic Farmhouse: Garvin-Weeks Farmstead The Garvin-Weeks Farmstead in beautiful North Reading, built c1790, has enjoyed a first floor makeover complete with a new kitchen, family room and master suite. Particular attention was given to preserve the historic details of the house while modernizing and opening up the space for today’s lifestyle. The open concept farmhouse style kitchen is striking with its antique beams and rafters, handmade and hand planed cabinets, distressed floors, custom handmade soapstone farmer’s sink, marble counter tops, kitchen island comprised of reclaimed wood with a milk paint finish, all setting the stage for the elaborate custom painted tile work. Skylights above bathe the space in natural light. Walking through the warm family room gives one the sense of history and days gone by, culminating in a quintessential looking, but fabulously updated new England master bedroom and bath. A spectacular addition that feels and looks like it has always been there! Photos by Eric Roth

Maison mix&match sur l'Île Saint Denis
Maison mix&match sur l'Île Saint Denis
Projet Wabi-sabiProjet Wabi-sabi
Dulwich 1930's Cottage Renovation
Dulwich 1930's Cottage Renovation
House by MiaHouse by Mia
Adorable 1930s cottage - set in a lovely quiet area of Dulwich - which had had it's 'soul stolen' by a refurbishment that whitewashed all the spaces and removed all features. The new owners came to us to ask that we breathe life back into what they knew was a house with great potential. ? The floors were solid and wiring all up to date, so we came in with a concept of 'modern English country' that would feel fresh and contemporary while also acknowledging the cottage's roots. ? The clients and I agreed that House of Hackney prints and lots of natural colour would be would be key to the concept. ? Starting with the downstairs, we introduced shaker panelling and built-in furniture for practical storage and instant character, brought in a fabulous F&B wallpaper, one of my favourite green paints (Windmill Lane by @littlegreenepaintcompany ) and mixed in lots of vintage furniture to make it feel like an evolved home.

Bespoke furniture design, featuring shelving system with storage underneath on both sides of the chimney. This made to measure storage perfectly fits alcoves that ware not perfectly even. Inside both cabinets we added extra shelves and cut outs for sockets and speaker wires. Alcove units were spray in lacquer to match F&B colours in lovely matt satin finish. As a final touch: beautiful brass handles made by small business owner and chosen from our "supporting small businesses" supplier list.

The stone fireplace in the old living room was retained as sentimental, keeping this cosy room but connecting it with the open plan, through utilising the same floor throughout and using slide doors to open it up.

Inspired by fantastic views, there was a strong emphasis on natural materials and lots of textures to create a hygge space. Making full use of that awkward space under the stairs creating a bespoke made cabinet that could double as a home bar/drinks area
