Designed for a couple and their two young children, this large home aims to capture the views of Santa Margarita Valley while complimenting the rural setting. Architecturally, the Spanish influence is characterized by the stucco finish, turreted entry, tile roof and iron work details throughout. At just over 4,900 SF the interior layout includes enough space to meet the needs of the parents and children alike. A large great room and kitchen feature vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, arched doorways and travertine floors. For the children, an 800 SF play room, located on the second floor opens to a balcony overlooking the back of the property. The play room, complete with its own bathroom and exterior entry, has the flexibility to later be converted into a guest apartment. The expansive rear patio backs up to acres of lush grass and the Santa Margarita countryside. The outdoor fireplace and large French doors leading into the house, make this space ideal for entertaining and enjoying the views.

The exterior of this villa style family house pops against its sprawling natural backdrop. The home’s elegant simplicity shown outwards is pleasing to the eye, as its welcoming entry summons you to the vast space inside. Richly textured white walls, offset by custom iron rails, bannisters, and chandelier/sconce ‘candle’ lighting provide a magical feel to the interior. The grand stairway commands attention; with a bridge dividing the upper-level, providing the master suite its own wing of private retreat. Filling this vertical space, a simple fireplace is elevated by floor-to-ceiling white brick and adorned with an enormous mirror that repeats the home’s charming features. The elegant high contrast styling is carried throughout, with bursts of colour brought inside by window placements that capture the property’s natural surroundings to create dynamic seasonal art. Indoor-outdoor flow is emphasized in several points of access to covered patios from the unobstructed greatroom, making this home ideal for entertaining and family enjoyment.

For the kitchen backsplash, the designer chose the San Jose Quarter 6" x 6" tiles, from our Barcelona collection, in a repeating pattern. Using our San Jose 6"x6" quarter tiles together with our San Jose 3"x3" tiles behind the sink area, the designer really understood the allure of this hand-painted Spanish tile series. The project was completed in 2007 by Design Build, located in San Diego, CA.

1. What Makes a Good Mediterranean Kitchen Design, and Why is it Important?

For starters, you want to find a balance between aesthetics and function. You may have heard of the ‘kitchen work triangle’, which refers to the space between your fridge, sink and stove. You want everything within easy reach when you’re working in the kitchen and look beautiful at the same time. It’s a good idea to take note of both when browsing our photo gallery.

2. Consider Your Space to Determine Your Kitchen Layout

Firstly, consider the space you have, and the limitations that come with it. Do you have a small kitchen and need to maximise your workspace and storage? 3. Decide on a Kitchen Style, But Don’t Forget Practicality

You want the style of your kitchen to reflect your personality and taste.
