I designed an inexpensive kitchen remodel that re-purposed ten year old shaker style kitchen cabinets. In order to give them an old world look, moldings were added and then the cabinets were painted and antiqued. Venetian plaster was used as the kitchen backsplash because it's a fabulously frugal option that lends itself to just about any decorating style, and you can do it yourself for around $100. We saved the cash for the focal point, which is a BlueStar cooktop, surrounded by an arched floor to ceiling enclosure made of travertine tiles, designed to look like a Tuscan brick oven. The island is new, but was made on the cheap with only 3 cabinets across the front. The back and sides are just matching wood veneers over a plywood frame, with decorative moldings added.

We started with black stained cabinets and some copper decor. The walls were textured in a rustic finish with the paints added into the texture. The colors are not just a top coating but through the texture. This is a true fresco finish. The walls were then clear coated in a protective finish making them washable. A California Mission-style home in Hillsborough was designed by the architect Farro Esslatt. The clients had an extensive contemporary collection and wanted a warm mix of contemporary and traditional furnishings.
