This lovely bathroom has everything that represents good design: well balanced; functional; aesthetically pleasing, interesting and individual; good use of space; and not only meeting, but exceeding, the clients' brief. The carefully chosen floor and feature wall tiles add a definite individual stamp, and allude to perhaps an art deco or retro mood. The room would be simply just another white bathroom without them. The white and black of the tiles is reflected in the selection of the white wall tiles and black tapware and accessories. The monochrome theme is then softened and made more inviting by the addition of the timber vanity with its fluted basins. The pretty mirrors are the touch of genius here, defying the straight lines elsewhere, and asserting their style on the whole. Successfully blending styles, shapes, colours and textures is the key to a result that supersedes the ordinary and says: 'This is my space'. The right advice and professional knowhow, including correct execution (note the beautiful tiling by our talented tilers), is also essential to ensure a polished designer-look. It is very much worth your time to carefully consider and select each individual element, ensuring that each one is of the highest quality within your budget. This will ensure a pleasing long-lasting look, no matter the whims of fashion.

The bathroom is minimalist. It has neutral tone such as white and very light grey. The texture of the mosaic tiles, marble tiles and terrazzo floor tiles create variation and interest in different surfaces.

For this home in the Canberra suburb of Forde, Studio Black Interiors gave the ensuite an interior design makeover. Studio Black was responsible for re-designing the ensuite and selecting the finishes and fixtures to make the ensuite feel more modern and practical for this family home. This penthouse apartment has glorious 270-degree views, and when we engaged to complete the extensive renovation, we knew that this apartment would be a visual masterpiece once finished. So we took inspiration from the colours featuring in many of their art pieces, which we bought into the kitchen colour, soft furnishings and wallpaper. We kept the bathrooms a more muted palette using a pale green on the cabinetry. The MC Lozza dining table, custom-designed wall units and make-up area added uniqueness to this space.

With its gabled rectangular form and black iron cladding, this clever new build makes a striking statement yet complements its natural environment. Internally, the house has been lined in chipboard with negative detailing. Polished concrete floors not only look stylish but absorb the sunlight that floods in, keeping the north-facing home warm. The bathroom also features chipboard and two windows to capture the outlook. One of these is positioned at the end of the shower to bring the rural views inside. Floor-to-ceiling dark tiles in the shower alcove make a stunning contrast to the wood. Made on-site, the concrete vanity benchtops match the imported bathtub and vanity bowls. Doors from each of the four bedrooms open to their own exposed aggregate terrace, landscaped with plants and boulders. Attached to the custom kitchen island is a lowered dining area, continuing the chipboard theme. The cabinets and benchtops match those in the bathrooms and contrast with the rest of the open-plan space. A lot has been achieved in this home on a tight budget.
