Mihaly SlocombePeriscope House draws light into a young family’s home, adding thoughtful solutions and flexible spaces to 1950s Art Deco foundations.
Our clients engaged us to undertake a considered extension to their character-rich home in Malvern East. They wanted to celebrate their home’s history while adapting it to the needs of their family, and future-proofing it for decades to come.
The extension’s form meets with and continues the existing roofline, politely emerging at the rear of the house. The tones of the original white render and red brick are reflected in the extension, informing its white Colorbond exterior and selective pops of red throughout.
Inside, the original home’s layout has been reimagined to better suit a growing family. Once closed-in formal dining and lounge rooms were converted into children’s bedrooms, supplementing the main bedroom and a versatile fourth room. Grouping these rooms together has created a subtle definition of zones: private spaces are nestled to the front, while the rear extension opens up to shared living areas.
A tailored response to the site, the extension’s ground floor addresses the western back garden, and first floor (AKA the periscope) faces the northern sun. Sitting above the open plan living areas, the periscope is a mezzanine that nimbly sidesteps the harsh afternoon light synonymous with a western facing back yard. It features a solid wall to the west and a glass wall to the north, emulating the rotation of a periscope to draw gentle light into the extension.
Beneath the mezzanine, the kitchen, dining, living and outdoor spaces effortlessly overlap. Also accessible via an informal back door for friends and family, this generous communal area provides our clients with the functionality, spatial cohesion and connection to the outdoors they were missing. Melding modern and heritage elements, Periscope House honours the history of our clients’ home while creating light-filled shared spaces – all through a periscopic lens that opens the home to the garden.

Imperfect InteriorsWe laid oak herringbone parquet in the games room of this Isle of Wight holiday home, a new fireplace, an antique piano & games table, and added bespoke Roman blinds as well as a built in bay window seat
Pineapple House Interior DesignA built-in bookcase on the right and a linear storage unit on the left were custom-designed for the niches flanking fireplace. The fireplace surround is accented with taupe woven, fabric-like wall covering. Acoustics from exposed hardwood floors are managed via upholstered furniture & window treatments.
Richmond Hill Design + BuildRichmond Hill Design + Build brings you this gorgeous American four-square home, crowned with a charming, black metal roof in Richmond’s historic Ginter Park neighborhood! Situated on a .46 acre lot, this craftsman-style home greets you with double, 8-lite front doors and a grand, wrap-around front porch. Upon entering the foyer, you’ll see the lovely dining room on the left, with crisp, white wainscoting and spacious sitting room/study with French doors to the right. Straight ahead is the large family room with a gas fireplace and flanking 48” tall built-in shelving. A panel of expansive 12’ sliding glass doors leads out to the 20’ x 14’ covered porch, creating an indoor/outdoor living and entertaining space. An amazing kitchen is to the left, featuring a 7’ island with farmhouse sink, stylish gold-toned, articulating faucet, two-toned cabinetry, soft close doors/drawers, quart countertops and premium Electrolux appliances. Incredibly useful butler’s pantry, between the kitchen and dining room, sports glass-front, upper cabinetry and a 46-bottle wine cooler. With 4 bedrooms, 3-1/2 baths and 5 walk-in closets, space will not be an issue. Laundry room, with cabinetry and counter space, is conveniently located off of the classic central hall upstairs. K. Rue Designs, LLCOpening up the great room to the rest of the lower level was a major priority in this remodel. Walls were removed to allow more light and open-concept design transpire with the same LVT flooring throughout. The fireplace received a new look with splitface stone and cantilever hearth. Painting the back wall a rich blue gray brings focus to the heart of this home around the fireplace. New artwork and accessories accentuate the bold blue color. Large sliding glass doors to the back of the home are covered with a sleek roller shade and window cornice in a solid fabric with a geometric shape trim.
Barn doors to the office add a little depth to the space when closed. Prospect into the family room, dining area, and stairway from the front door were important in this design.
