The designers opted to create a display area for the instruments in the home office so it became an inspiring space for him to both work and enjoy his hobby by showcasing his prized possessions and offering easy access so they can be played.

From CDK Architects: This is a new home that replaced an existing 1949 home in Rosedale. The design concept for the new house is “Mid Century Modern Meets Modern.” This is clearly a new home, but we wanted to give reverence to the neighborhood and its roots. It was important to us to re-purpose the old home. Rather than demolishing it, we worked with our contractor to disassemble the house piece by piece, eventually donating about 80% of the home to Habitat for Humanity. The wood floors were salvaged and reused on the new fireplace wall. The home contains 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, plus a home office and a music studio, totaling 2,650 square feet. One of the home’s most striking features is its large vaulted ceiling in the Living/Dining/Kitchen area. Substantial clerestory windows provide treetop views and bring dappled light into the space from high above. There’s natural light in every room in the house. Balancing the desire for natural light and privacy was very important, as was the connection to nature. What we hoped to achieve was a fun, flexible home with beautiful light and a nice balance of public and private spaces. We also wanted a home that would adapt to a growing family but would still fit our needs far into the future. The end result is a home with a calming, organic feel to it. MUSIC STUDIO. This imposing, red brick, Victorian villa has wonderful proportions, so we had a great skeleton to work with. Formally quite a dark house, we used a bright colour scheme, introduced new lighting and installed plantation shutters throughout. The brief was for it to be beautifully stylish at the same time as being somewhere the family can relax. We also converted part of the double garage into a music studio for the teenage boys - complete with sound proofing!

Built-in shelves contain the owners' vast collection of vinyl records and CDs. The room is spacious enough for a baby grand piano and an upright bass, as well as other musical instruments. This room was formerly a tiled cold space with angled walls, no storage and cables lying around everywhere. Our brief was to integrate an extremely large television and audio visual equipment, and to include a fireplace and interesting storage for objects d'art. There were significant challenges with the space, however the end result is a warm, inviting and seamless space where none of the telltale signs of modern AV technology are on display except for the TV itself (which is flush-mounted and backlit by warm LED strip lighting), and the sub-woofer concealed in its own housing but still open to allow for airflow. We incorporated four separate deep niches and wrapped each in textured vinyl, meticulously applied to ensure the horizontal lines flowed continuously, and lit them with a warm glow from concealed LED strip lighting. The incredible open fronted fireplace was selected to match the width of the TV exactly, and has is deceptively deep. We finished this with a solid granite hearth. Clever cupboards with push to open hardware conceal all of the rest of the technology and equipment. The room is furnished with two 4 seat soft leather chesterfield style lounges and fruitwood coffee and side tables. A large window streams winter sunlight in making the entire room glow.
