Our design for the façade of this house contains many references to the work of noted Bay Area architect Bernard Maybeck. The concrete exterior panels, aluminum windows designed to echo industrial steel sash, redwood log supporting the third floor breakfast deck, curving trellises and concrete fascia panels all reference Maybeck’s work. However, the overall design is quite original in its combinations of forms, eclectic references and reinterpreting of motifs. The use of steel detailing in the trellis’ rolled c-channels, the railings and the strut supporting the redwood log bring these motifs gently into the 21st Century. The house was intended to respect its immediate surroundings while also providing an opportunity to experiment with new materials and unconventional applications of common materials, much as Maybeck did during his own time.

A previous client (Big Wood Lane) reached out to us to help design a remodel of a recently purchased on the south shore of Lake Minnetonka. The home had grown organically since its original construction in 1945. It had evolved over time to accommodate the needs of its numerous owners. Our client brought a new set of needs to the home that included a desire to make the lake home a comfortable destination for family and friends. The project consisted of reconfiguring an outdated, inefficient kitchen, expansion of the bedroom wing to include individual bathrooms for bedrooms and redesign of the central stair guard rail. The redesign of the kitchen included repositioning major appliances for greater efficiency, more seating at an enlarged island, a new pantry, and expanded views to the lake. The expansion of the bedroom wing included eliminating a three-season porch on top of the garage on the inland side of the home. The space above the garage roof was enclosed and turned into dedicated bathrooms for each bedroom. These bathrooms are accessible only from the bathrooms which provide privacy and convenience to visitors.

One of Wendy's main wishes on the brief was a large pantry.

Inspired by the original Ladbroke kitchen, the Long Acre kitchen is a beautiful chic take on the contemporary design. The incredible mid-azure green cabinetry combines beautifully with walnut timber to create a chic, sophisticated room Balancing the bold green with a simple light wash of pink on the walls ensures the rich, intense green can take centre stage in the room. The open walnut shelving within the island is the perfect place to show off larger pottery or glassware, as well as your favourite cookery books. Complete with a seating area, this island is the perfect area for entertaining friends and family. With a wonderful backdrop of brass, the light is reflected around the space, enhancing every detail, even down to the matching brass handles and antique brass taps. This open yet comforting canvas will never go out of fashion, with rich colours and warming walnut timber. The walnut super stave worktop adds a warmth and depth to the kitchen and contributes a beautiful earthy quality to the design. The natural hues of the kitchen and contrasting materials create an incredibly welcoming environment. Photography by Tim Doyle.
