The remodel took traffic flow and appliance placement into consideration. The refrigerator was relocated to an area closer to the sink and out of the flow of traffic. Recessed lighting and under-cabinet lighting now flood the kitchen with warm light. The closet pantry and a half wall between the family room and kitchen were removed and a peninsular with seating area was added to provide a large work surface, storage on both sides and shelving with baskets to store homework, craft items and books. Opening this area up provided a welcoming spot for friends and family to gather when entertaining. The microwave was placed at a height that was safe and convenient for the whole family. Cabinets taken to the ceiling, large drawers, pantry roll-outs and a corner lazy susan have helped make this kitchen a pleasure to gather as a family.

This two-toned kitchen features Fieldstone Woodfield in the Marshmallow Cream finish along the perimeter, and Kraftmaid Marquette in the Cherry Peppercorn finish on the island. Custom appliance panels were added along with a custom hood top. The beautiful hammered copper farm sink is by Native Trails, and accented with a Delta Victorian faucet in oil-rubbed bronze. Mark Rosenhaus, CKD. The cabinet sizes are based on Fibonacci Numbers to create a composition similar to a three dimensional Mondrian. The inspiration comes from the space itself. Various beams, heat pipe and gas meter dictate the sizes of the cabinets. Pleasing squares, Golden Rectangles, negative space and horizontal lift up doors whirl around the 10’ high space in a spiral pattern similar to the Nautilus seashell. The ribbed sliding glass doors allow access to the cabinet without open doors in your face and also give direction. The husband liked modern and the wife wanted Shaker, but rescinded in order to have the curve and circle she also loved. The shapes are a metaphor for steam and bubbles rising over the stove.

A close look at the reeded glass cabinet doors. Typically you would see this running vertically, but since the cabinet grain is all horizontal, we thought running the glass horizontal made more sense. Since we have the glass doors, we decided to make these cabinets from teak as well so you wouldn't see the white IKEA frame through the glass.
