The interior of the wharf cottage appears boat like and clad in tongue and groove Douglas fir. A small galley kitchen sits at the far end right. Nearby an open serving island, dining area and living area are all open to the soaring ceiling and custom fireplace. The fireplace consists of a 12,000# monolith carved to received a custom gas fireplace element. The chimney is cantilevered from the ceiling. The structural steel columns seen supporting the building from the exterior are thin and light. This lightness is enhanced by the taught stainless steel tie rods spanning the space. Inspired by local fishing shacks and wharf buildings dotting the coast of Maine, this re-imagined summer cottage interweaves large glazed openings with simple taut-skinned New England shingled cottage forms. Photos by Tome Crane, c 2010.

Originally built in the 1930’s emerging from the International Style that made its way into Minneapolis thanks to visionary clients and a young architect, newly graduated from the University of Minnesota with a passion for the new “modern architecture” The current owners had purchased the home in 2001, immediately falling in love with style and appeal of living lakeside. As the family began to grow they found themselves running out of space and wanted to find a creative way to add some functional space while still not taking away from the original International Style of the home. They turned to the team of Streeter & Associates and Peterssen/Keller Architecture to transform the home into something that would function better for the growing family. The team went to work by adding a third story addition that would include a master suite, sitting room, closet, and master bathroom. While the main level received a smaller addition that would include a guest suite and bathroom. Modern pool and cabana where the granite ledge of Gloucester Harbor meet the manicured grounds of this private residence. The modest-sized building is an overachiever, with its soaring roof and glass walls striking a modern counterpoint to the property’s century-old shingle style home. Photo by: Nat Rea Photography
