The last installment of our Summer Porch Series is actually my own Screened Porch. My husband Tom and I love this outdoor space, and I have designed it like I would any other room in my home. When we purchased our home, it was just a covered porch. We added the screens, and it has been worth every penny. A couple of years ago, we even added a television out here so we could watch our beloved Bulldogs play football. We brought the all-weather wicker furniture from our previous home, but I recently had the cushions recovered in outdoor fabrics of blues and greens. This extends the color palette from my newly redesigned Den into this space. I added colorful accessories like an oversized green ceramic lamp, and navy jute poufs serve as my coffee table. I even added artwork to fill the large wall over a console. Of course, I let nature be the best accessory and filled pots and hanging baskets with pet friendly plants. We love our Screened Porch and utilize it as a third living space in our home. We hope you have enjoyed our Summer Porch Series and are inspired to redesign your outdoor spaces. For the patio spaces, we coordinated the color palette and fabric patterns with the interior spaces. In the pack patio, Asian garden stools were used instead of side tables. A very clean and simple concrete fire pit bowl sits in the center of the patio, perfect for summer nights. The fire pit can be easily moved to the side when room for a dance floor is needed. Lots of potted plants in over scaled ceramic containers surround the area and help to further define the space. On the front porch, sit director’s chairs with white canvas seats. A black ceramic garden stool acts as the side table and yellow and white outdoor fabric pillows brighten the space and welcome guests. Photography by Erika Bierman

Small Transitional Verandah Design Ideas

A transitional verandah requires careful planning because it is here that you transition from the outside of your home to the inside. A roofed and open, or partly open, portion of a house, a verandah is more than just an entryway to your house. It is here you can play games, sit on a swing chair while sipping lemonade, chat to neighbours, and watch the world go by. What style of verandah should I add to my home?

This will be primarily dictated by your budget, space and overall style of your home. Typically, transitional verandahs are integrated into a home’s roofline, so they will most likely always be a pricey renovation. Flat or skillion-roofed verandahs are popular home additions because they can be shaped to fit most house plans, or extend out to other zones, like a pool, for example. A pitched/gabled or curved roof will give you more height and a more open feel, while a concave roof looks best on a verandah attached to a period home. How can I decorate my transitional verandah?

Your verandah decor should reflect your personality and lifestyle, but most importantly, how you will use the space. If you want it to encourage lounging and people watching, add a hammock, swing chair or daybed – the more seating you have, the more likely you are to use it with friends. Get more from your verandah by including a dining table and chairs, with some feature pendant lighting to draw attention to the zone. You could also go beyond seating, by adding the likes of a console or planters. If you’re spoilt with a view, you can also keep it utterly simple with just two comfy armchairs to sink back into. Add colour through wall hangings, potted plants, pillows and rugs, but remember to opt for fabrics that are waterproof and fade-resistant. If you're unsure, get help from a designer!
