Way up North, nestled among pine trees, Melissa Coleman’s cedar-clad A-frame cabin is a modern retreat for outdoor lovers. Coleman, a designer and blogger known as The Faux Martha, completely renovated the dilapidated structure. The dramatic renovation is an homage to Minnesota and cabin culture.
As part of her renovation, Coleman replaced permanently fogged windows with products from the Marvin Ultimate collection. She also chose the Marvin Skycove and Marvin Awaken Skylights to fill the previously dim space with natural light and views of the Northwoods.
“[The Skycove] looks like it’s always been there. Like it was always supposed to be there,” said Melissa Coleman. “And somehow, a wall of glass windows is incredibly cozy. Just add a cushion and a heavy wool blanket, a good cup of pour-over and a book, and well, you have your weekend plans. If you could install magic in a space, this is the way to do it.”

This Claremont home was in the middle stages of construction as a duplex when our clients purchased it. However, they wanted a single family home inspired by Japanese design. The owners have a great modern aesthetic and also wanted to use just a few different materials which created a strong and simple palette. Added to this clean look are chartreuse main doors, midcentury modern lighting, a tatami room, and black metal stair railing. These carefully placed details offer a unique and personal character to the home. In addition, a children’s reading nook and desk under the stair case utilizes the space fully and adds another individual touch.

Super functional under stair storage cabinets. Super heavy duty glides give access to the huge storage cabinets.

This incredibly unique staircase was the brain child of architect Jon Gunson. It was constructed on site by a very clever member of the Sweet Homes team.

Organic, earthy, woods, trees. Clients were looking for a natural vibe for their lake view home. We incorporated an open, branchy design using steel to create a solid, sturdy, yet visually warm railing for their living area. Photo taken by artist.

due to lot orientation and proportion, we needed to find a way to get more light into the house, specifically during the middle of the day. the solution that we came up with was the location of the stairs along the long south property line, combined with the glass railing, skylights, and some windows into the stair well. we allowed the stairs to project through the glass as thought the glass had sliced through the steps.

The homeowner works from home during the day, so the office was placed with the view front and center. Although a rooftop deck and code compliant staircase were outside the scope and budget of the project, a roof access hatch and hidden staircase were included. The hidden staircase is actually a bookcase, but the view from the roof top was too good to pass up!
