Harka Architecture

We worked with Patrick and Brad at Harka on an ADU design project this year. We didn't end up reaching the build stage (for reasons that had nothing to do with them) but we would have been thrilled to see it come to fruition. The did a good job of taking our rough vision and fleshing it out into something really interesting, despite its necessarily small size. They brought both practicality and creativity to the project and I think the small space would have lived really well. I would highly recommend them.

We consulted with Harka on a remodel, specifically looking for advice on energy efficient window choices and ERVs. Patrick’s knowledge for products and technology was current, accurate, and took into account our budget. We LOVED working with Patrick on this small consultation, and hope to work with Harka in the future for a guesthouse buildout, if we’re so lucky. :) Cannot recommend him enough!!!

This was our first venture into retail, so the choice of architectural firms was critical. We chose Harka not only because of their experience, but because they seemed to want to work in partnership with us, instead of just handing us a plan and moving on to the next project. Patrick and the other great folks at Harka were tremendous. They helped us in every way, not only with our general store layout, but also in planning foot traffic, signage, planning for security issues and more, including not only how the customer would see the store, but also making a design that was the most efficient for us operationally, and, of course, keeping our budget on track. It was a great working relationship, and would hire them again should the situation arise!

We feel so fortunate to have found Patrick and his crew at Harka and couldn’t be happier with their design of our off-grid cabin. We lost the original cabin, built by hippies in the 70s, to a wildfire. We loved that place and, while small, it left big shoes to fill. Patrick considered the cabin’s place on the landscape and integrated the elements into the design - the prevailing winds, the movement of the sun, potential snowfall, and rainfall. He maximized our views and natural light while making sure we had a building envelope that would keep us comfortable in the bitter cold of winter and the scorching heat of summer. The materials he selected were as sustainable and fire resistant as our budget would allow. He came to the table with creative ideas and, importantly, he listened.

We worked with Harka on a major remodel that retained only our basement walls and the foundation, and rebuilt the main floor with a new master suite above. Our home is in an established neighborhood that was built in the 1950s, and it was important to us that the new structure did not clash with the neighborhood, but also exhibited a modern design. Additionally, we were height limited by CC&Rs, and we needed to stay within the existing footprint due to our lot size. Harka worked within these constraints and surpassed all of our expectations. Harka's design maximizes the views of Puget Sound provided by our lot, while implementing appealing and efficient architecture that includes exactly the right amount of shading. We couldn't be happier with the results Harka delivered, and we routinely talk to each other about how much we love our new space.

We needed to remodel our two story house to make it accessible for a family member newly in a wheelchair. Patrick was amazingly creative in figuring out where to put an elevator, take out walls, and reconfigure the kitchen. Tammy worked with us tirelessly on various options for the kitchen layout as well as all the other details of the project. When there were inevitable and unexpected complications with construction along the way, they were instrumental in figuring out solutions. They were immediately responsive, thoughtful, and a pleasure to work with. Everything was done in the most professional manner. Our house looks amazing with a new elevator and a new floor plan that looks like it was built that way in the beginning. I can't recommend them highly enough.

I highly recommend Harka for architectural services. They designed our ADU apartment addition (an upstairs unit built onto our garage), and whenever I show people the space, the first thing they say upon entering is, "Wow...this is really nice!" I ran into budget issues that I blame mainly on my own naivety going in to this project, but having learned from experience, if I was going to do another project like this, I would definitely hire the Harka team again. They do great design work, they are professional, friendly, good communicators, and especially knowledgeable when it comes to energy-saving features and materials.

Patrick, Tammy, and the crew at Harka did an awesome job for us on our overwhelming project! They helped with every aspect of our process, had answers for everything, and helped guide us in the right direction. I really appreciated that they were always available and always had a good solution for any issue that would come up! You're in good hands with this crew of good people!

Harka Architecture worked with us from the initial concepts of our addition to the final completion of the last coat of paint on the house by the contractor. They were meticulous, always in touch during the project, informed us on specifics or changes as the project was underway, helped keep our contractor close to the project time-line and plans, and overall were very pleasant to deal with. At no time did we feel dissatisfied or in-the-dark. The entire project from initial draft plans of the project to the very end was smooth. Definitely would hire Harka for our next project.

Patrick, Josh, and team were great to work with and very professional. They took our vision and ran with it. Even when location circumstance threw us for a loop, they quickly pivoted. They were quick to respond and had a good balance of expertise and open-mindedness.

Patrick and the Harka team were truly awesome. Our project at Portland Audubon was to remake our summer camp / outdoor school facility. We worked in two phases over five years (our delays, not theirs). The first phase was to build two giant yurts for dorms and upgrade the parking, fire suppression, and septic infrastructure to accommodate a growth in capacity from 20 to 60 students. Patrick helped us through the permitting process and created living quarters that thrill kids. In the second phase we turned a small shack into a beautiful cabin. It was a major upgrade while at the same time preserving the historic and sentimental virtues of the old cabin. The new cabin (at 1.1 million it is quite a cabin) is beautiful, functional, and elegantly simple. Everyone who sees it, loves it. Kids especially. I also thank Patrick for all his help solving problems as they arose. We couldn't have finished it on-time, on-budget, and to everyone's delight without him and the team. I recommend Harka highly. As with any architect you need to watch that they don't get too fancy (spendy) on you, especially with finishes. Some really fancy ceiling fans snuck by, for example. In the end I'm glad they did.

I built an ADU with Patrick back in 2009 and couldn't be happier with the results. This was a big project (ADU + Art Studio) amounting to about 1700sq feet of new building. Patrick is especially valuable because he has a great vision, but not at the expense of the owner's ideas or budget realities. I've since hired Patrick for several other projects and would definitely hire him again.

What did I do right in a former life to get this team? A+ all around, recommend them up and down to all my friends.

Harka was perfect. I am opening a sandwich shop and Sara and Patrick have been incredibly helpful in every step of the way. From designing to getting an over the counter permit, everything was very smooth. They are professional yet welcoming and I would 100% work with again on any project.

Harka is a very professional firm. I will continue to use them as need arises. You wont be disappointed. They are efficient, friendly, fast, and competent. They got back to me immediately and if they couldn't answer my question without research, they were sure to get back promptly with the answer. Thanks Patrick and crew.

I worked with Harka on the design of my new construction house. Originally designed as an ADU, we were able to come up with a cohesive design that satisfied both the requirements of the city for it and as a single family home. Harka had a lot of great suggestions on how to make this possible. They also had design considerations for maximizing the space, seasonal lighting patterns for passive heating and cooling, and an awesome open concept, modern layout. They were super helpful from the initial site visits, all the way through the permitting process. I would highly recommend working with them-- they are super nice, professional, and fun to work with.

If you require the ultimate attention to detail, out of the box creative thinking, effective and professional project management, then this is your firm. Patrick is all of that plus some. You wont be sorry contracting this firm. They will do you right the first time. My only regret is that they dont have a office in Montana!

Patrick was simply awesome to work with. Most importantly, he figured me out pretty quickly, which helped in the design ideas we came up for my complete gut and redo of a 100-year-old little farm house, plus an add-on of a new master suite. For this project, we had to completely reimagine a space, moving from small rooms and lots of walls to an open-concept idea -- and we partnered on all of it. There were things I wanted to do that we weren't ultimately able to do which was such a bummer (no fault of Patrick's - cost, building codes, etc., made us switch gear several times); It's a journey and respecting and trusting Patrick throughout that was wildly helpful. And, he was very nice when I would come up with an idea that didn't make sense, and then would riff off what I was thinking to design things that were in keeping with my goals but that would work on a practical level. And, Patrick was very accessible - by phone and email when we weren't actually poring over design ideas in his office. All that said, the thing I most appreciated about working with Patrick is that he never, ever condescended to me about anything. As a single woman with a large project, I worried about this. I don't think that's even in Patrick's DNA. That said, he would explain anything to me that I wanted to understand better so I could make informed decisions. Patrick is also really nice. And funny. You will spend a lot of time with your architect (or you should!) and it's important to actually like that person. Patrick was honest, transparent and helpful throughout. The one bit of advice he gave me that I didn't go along with was choice of windows. I wish I had listened to him. Windows are a BIG deal in a house for a bunch of reasons. Patrick tried every which way to convince me on some styles (how they open, which way they open, where they are relative to sight lines, etc.) and I was set on some very specific ideas. And I regret it. I should have listened to him on that front. In short, I would work with Patrick again in a heartbeat!

Patrick helped me through an issue with the City where we had to a legalize a 3,000 square foot basement containing a commercial kitchen with walk-ins, a hood, HVAC, bathroom, temp controlled storage and utilities. He handled planning, the permit process and directing the general contractor. He helped smooth out a difficult situation for us and was an essential player in resolving our issues with the City.

Patrick and his group were awesome . From the start until even after the project was complete . He took and old empty building and turned it into the coolest place in Portland . Please come see for yourself . it is located at the SE corner of 24th and NE Glisan .

Pat is a friendly professional architect. His firm has helped me with a basement remodel, but ncluding a bathroom addition. Very knowledgable about green building and the newest materials. LEED certified.
