About Us

ILD specializes in design/build projects ranging from small urban gardens to large residential and commercial projects with an emphasis on fine stonework and native planting. ILD jobs are installed without using heavy equipment where possible to minimize environmental impact on job sites. ILD was started by Denis Radford and Ashley Kidner in 1989. In addition to designing their own projects ILD has worked with some of Maryland's best Landscape Architects. Work by ILD has been featured in the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Magazine and Home Magazine. The company has done work at the National Arboretum in Washington DC, in addition to an installation for Greek Artist Jannis Kounellis at the Hirshorn Gallery also in DC. Other work has been in association with Danish/Icelandic artist Olifur Eliason.

Impressed by his use of native plants, we met Ashley at the Home & Garden Show in 2015. Ashley designed a wonderful perennial garden for us showing the color and purpose of each plant including the benefit the plant had to nature. From spring through fall we had different flowers blooming and showing wondrous colors. As we walked down our stone steps, we were amazed at the hum of nature surrounding us including humming birds and butterflies galore. ILD did a great job incorporating our existing stone and adding boulders to for a very serene environment. We love the work they did and plan to use them for more projects in the future.

I highly recommend ILD. Professional, lovely aesthetic, great crew! Ashley designed & installed flagstone patio out back & replaced existing beds in front & back of house in Fall 2014. I love the natural feel & year round appeal. I hired him again in Fall 2015 to replace concrete walkway at front entrance with flagstone paths & plantings. It looks as if it were always meant to be that way, better than I could have imagined. Thank you Ashley & your hardworking crew.

I have used this firm for a number of landscaping projects since moving into my home over 20 years ago. ILD did the initial landscaping and all maintenance and improvements since that time. They have done an outstanding job from the beginning. They are extremely competent (the best in their field as far as I am concerned), professional, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to deal with. I have never had a landscaping challenge they have not solved, within budget and on time. And I have never had a negative experience of any type. I have recommended them to a number of friends and colleagues over the years, who owned a wide variety of properties, and every one of them has been very pleased. I can very confidently recommend ILD without reservation.

ILD designed and installed a beautiful new backyard for me this summer. The work involved removing a yard full of ivy, an old crumbling patio, and regrading to get the water to flow away from the house! Using beautiful specimen stone, they installed a lovely winding path from a simple stone patio. The path is graced on both sides with a variety of plantings including a Japanese maple, oak-leaf hydrangeas, azaleas, ferns and much more. They were prompt in their work, showed up early, were polite and left the area clean everyday! A pleasure to work with and a beautiful garden! I highly recommend Ashley and his crew!

Denis and crew created my outdoor sanctuary of a two level pond with a waterfall. They planted a dwarf Japenese maple and indigenous plants. In the years since it has blended and grown to be the place I go for peace and solitude ...I recommend them highly to create that space for any or everyone.

Ashley and his team have put in a patio with arbor, installed a pond and waterfall, a sunken garden and garden paths with extensive stone-work. He has also designed and installed various garden vistas. ILD also does our yearly spring maintenance. They are genuinely enthusiastic about their work, and go above and beyond to meet their schedules. Ashley is also an artist and our garden reflects his eye for color and form, making it a unique space which has inspired friends and neighbors to also seek the services of ILD.

This company was initially hired to create a rain garden in the rear of my very small property. Subsequently, they completed a project to expand the beauty of the rear landscaping with several native bushes, trees, shade-tolerant ground cover plants, decorative stones to control the flow of rainwater, and 2 brick & concrete patio benches. Another project added brick edging to the front walkway. In following years, they have provided spring and fall maintenance. I have been pleased with the beauty and quality of their work. They are honest, courteous, cordial, and meticulous craftsmen. Their clear communication insures that scope of work and cost expectations are realistic. They have been consistently prompt for all scheduled appointments.

IDL provided landscape design and installation services for my Victorian home in Centreville, MD. The job was done on time and on budget, and improved the appearance of our home tremendously. Denis and his crew were very professional and maintain the very highest standards of workmanship. The project included brick walkways,holly trees lining our driveway, a rain garden and dry riverbed, and complete redo of our overall landscape plantings. ILD installed a rock garden in my front yard with stones, bamboo, and plantings. They did brickwork, stone work and plantings in my backyard. They also installed planters and did concrete work. Staff was professional. They worked fast and were reasonably priced.

We have been clients of ILD for nearly 20 years. They designed, and maintained our grounds, gardens, ponds & water features, including the landscaping for two distinctly different homes. Like player-coaches, the owners of ILD are on the job from design consultation to hands on working the grounds, and paying attention to every detail that goes into the overall plan until completion. They are a start to finish company that stands behind their work and maintains a personal relationship with their customers. No job is too small or too large. When we moved an hour away from the home where ILD designed and maintained our gardens we had occasion to consider other landscapers only to swiftly return to ILD as their customer service, quality, and overall skill set are second to none.
