Stephen Procter Ceramics

Stephen Procter is a unique artist and potter. His creations both large and small are done with such care, love, and detail. Our project was a one off type and Stephen's approach was so connected and caring to our vision. The end result was perfect! Thanks!

I have several vessels by Stephen Procter in my gardens and in my home. They are exquisitely beautiful and at the same time elegantly simple. They attract the eye, and enhance what is around them, indoors and out. In the garden, they stand sentinel through the winter and come alive with the plants in the spring. I recommend Stephen Procter to anyone looking for a way to add a gorgeous focal point to a garden or to a home.

Inspired ceramic work - I love Steve's large and small scale vessels and functional ware as well. One very large vessel sits tranquil in my garden and is now growing a bit of moss and lichen, and settling in with the surrounding environment with beautiful presence. Also a large earthen water barrel, and a few flower vessels are both functional and aesthetically gratifying. And, I will say, eating my breakfast oatmeal from one of Steve's gorgeous glazed bowls gives me a lovely start to the day.

I've worked professionally and personally with Stephen Procter. I curated an exhibition of his work in the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center Sculpture Garden. He created a stunning body of work for the show. Importantly, he produced it with adequate time to be photographed, allowing me to make publication deadlines. When designing my new home I commissioned a large pot for a very specific placement with the base eight feet above the floor. Stephen spent a lot of time in the space contemplating the perspective. The result is stunning. So much so that I've purchased and sited three other pieces in my home and garden.

We have admired Stephen's pots in gardens and other outdoor niches for years and once we made the leap ourselves, we've bought two more outdoor pots. Stephen has been very helpful and easy to work with, bringing us different options, trying different locations for each pot and making sure they sit correctly. We have also bought a pot for the office which may be put outdoors during the summer.

Stephen Procter's stoneware vessels add elegance and beauty to our gardens. We have one nestled among the flowers, another acting as a sentry on top of a stone wall, and a third in the corner of the courtyard. All three are focal points in the landscape.

I really enjoyed working with Stephen on our recent project. His took the time to understand what I was looking for! Throughout the process he checked in with me and the end result was that the pots he made for me were exactly what I was looking for. His technical expertise was invaluable. The project was completed on time, and I look forward to working with him again in the near future!

Steve Procter is a master ceramicist with a compelling and unique voice. His large vessels are more akin to sculptures than pots. Their elegant presence commands touching and stroking. I have five of his pieces - each with its own personality. I display the pots in small groups, indoors and outside, and love to observe the interplay between them. Steve's works have transformed my indoor and outdoor spaces by their beautiful lines and evocative nature. I highly recommend Steve's high-fired stoneware sculptured vessels!

As an architect, I appreciate fine form-making. Especially impressive is the person who can conceive AND execute the beautiful object. Steve Procter does this with every vessel. A recent show at our town's foremost gallery displayed a broad range of his work, including large unglazed vessels and smaller pieces with glazes which resembled feathers, butterfly wings and calligraphy. A fine new restaurant hired him to create a wall mural of ceramic plates and the result is remarkable. We own five of his pieces and enjoy visiting his studio where he comes across as a highly skilled, yet thoughtful and modest artist. It is always a pleasure to interact with him. The dramatic - one might say architectural - scale of his largest pieces makes them a wonderful focal point in the landscape or in a modern or traditional interior.

My husband and I recently purchased a large outdoor vessel from Stephen Procter for our small urban backyard. We love it -- it's beautiful and unusual and perfect for us. It was a complete delight working with Stephen: he brought us several options and patiently helped us make our final choice. We are great admirers of his work and we're so pleased to own one of his creations.

Stephen Procter is a consumate artist creating the most beautifully crafted sculptural ceramic vessels. His pieces range in sizes, from 14 inches to 4 feet. They all have same wonderful quality which reflects his vision as an artist. They remind me of a greek amphora. They have earthen tones, sometimes they have lids. Stephen fires them at a very high temperature so they are able to stay outside even in the harshest of winters. If you place them outdoors you will be able to enjoy them year round. The pieces have a very natural look to them, you can feel the clay and when you touch some of them will have a very slight ridge and some will have a smooth surface. Their shapes are perfectly delineated while retaining their free form. Stephen does not use a mold. The larger pieces had to be shipped & they were packed perfectly. His pieces are truly unique and alone or together they provide a magical environment. They bring a sense of beauty & balance to whoever is lucky to glance at them. We absolutely love them !! He is fabulous to deal with.

We have known and admired Stephen's work for several years and in the last two years bought pots for use both inside and outside the house. Outdoors the pots give a wonderful accent to the gardens and indoors his smaller pieces just stand out, each one being unique. Steven Sayer
