It was a mixed experience working with Ward5 for full service design and project management, meaning, they prepare the interior design plan and then manage the contractor. The positive part of the experience was that they are creative and have a great aesthetic, so I feel we ended up with a house that we like the look of. In retrospect, it's not worth the money they charge for project management on a monthly basis to get there. I know this now, but I was a first time homebuyer and pregnant when I hired them, so I felt I needed help. Working with Ward5 became very frustrating towards the end of the project. Some highlights (lowlights?) were that the owner continuously promised she would order components for our custom closets, but failed to do so in time, so we had to buy Home Depot closets in order to have our closets ready by the time we moved in (which we said early on was very important to us and had to be complete before moving in). Also, some of the work from the contractor was messy/subpar. When I pointed it all out to the owner of Ward5, who had been managing the project, she tried to convince me I was just being picky and it was "acceptable," in her words (about some of the painting, specifically, and tiling). When I told her I wanted some things redone, she asked me to deliver that message to the contractor myself...but she was supposed to be in charge of that. So about a month or so before moving in, I had to meet them both at the house - still somewhat newly postpartum and still nursing around the clock - to deliver that news myself. The contractor was great about it and fixed everything I had an issue with. Finally, the move in was made more stressful by Ward5 being mad that we were basically in their way. The owner assigned her daughter to do the installation and I told her the date that we were having certain closets installed. She showed up that date and was angry there were "so many people" in the house. But she was advised in advance who would be there and when. She accused us of being in her way, essentially. Then she rescheduled the installation date and asked us not to be in the house from 8 am - 4 pm, which we did, but at around 5 that day, I had to run in quickly to grab some clothes for my kids. She was very upset and had a very emotional and unprofessional reaction, even though I adhered to her timeframe. So, overall, I wouldn't work with them again. I do think their real strengths are in the design piece, so I would have just paid for their design services, if I knew back then what I know now.

We've had an excellent experience with them and recommend them to anyone looking for an architect or interior designer. They are extremely talented designers who have been able to create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Despite extensive initial discussion with our decorator Mimi, the first round of our Jackson Heights, Queens kitchen and bathroom designs were nowhere near what we had requested (style, color, finishings, or budget). The decorator seemed to struggle with the 3D software, so the visual presentation didn't correspond with our actual space (all the dimensions, scale, colors, and even window placements were off). The owner, Leni, took over and was keen to provide a design that we could be excited about—and she did eventually provide us with a something that aligned with our taste—but two contractors have told us that the features we most liked about the design are impossible to build. We had also been told that they would design the kitchen with Ikea cabinetry as we requested, yet after the design was presented with non-Ikea cabinetry, the owner announced that she doesn't like Ikea (she admitted the "miscommunication"). The designs were eventually delivered over a month past the proposed delivery date, and the plan was way, way over our budget. Furthermore, the decorator was late to meetings and frequently underprepared. A waste of time and money—sloppy and extremely disappointing.

Woah, I'm surprised at any neg reviews here. My BF and I are wrapping up a gut reno of our new prewar house (stressful!) and needed guidance on picking materials and fixtures and placing some of the furniture. I was at the end of my rope and couldn't handle the thought of making even MORE decisions...Luckily, I found Ward 5--ended up booking a consultation and then purchasing a whole design package. Our designer, Leni, couldn't have been more helpful! Shee's super responsive, funny, nice, AND full of cool ideas - a perfect combo!

Using Ward 5 Design was a great way to make a HUGE improvement in our home and still not totally break the bank. They really used our style and just gave us sound advice so we could pull it all together ourselves. Mimi was my designer and she's great. She was able to pull off a very bold eclectic look without being overwhelming. Shopped mostly antique markets. Didn't spend full price on one furniture item so far!

My experience with Ward 5 was exceptional. Staff and designer were responsive, professional, and very helpful. Our decorator came to our house right away, understood our needs and tastes immediately, and created a terrific Pinterest board with tons of ideas. She handled all the ordering and follow up. Leni, our designer, was available evenings and weekends, and responded to all of our emails within 12 hours. She couldn't have been more delightful to work with. Our entire house was furnished from scratch in about a month. We are thrilled with the results.

Any question or message was answered that day, if not within hours. After several months of working together the space looks better than I ever expected it would while staying within our budget. So happy with Ward 5 Design and their work. Every time I walk into my home, I smile now. We have wall paper on the ceiling of the entrance way which is so classy and original. My FAVORITE thing about this experience was that Leni designed for our needs. She knew we wanted to entertain a lot and not create a home that was for "homebodies". So she found us a bar table that could seat for a dinner party but also convert into an awesome food station during a party. Overtime, she became a good friend of ours who now attends our parties! I'm always screaming "she was the designer" whenever anyone compliments our apartment. She also lets me text her pictures to get her opinions whenever we are looking into moving furniture or buying something new. Definitely depend on her taste and would totally recommend them!

I was really impressed with Max when she came for our appointment. She is warm, easy to work with and clearly very knowledgeable. We accomplished so much during the one hour consultation. I love that she gave me some suggestions to "tweak" the layout of my furniture to pull the room together, suggested a few paint colors for each room to narrow my options from the vast amount of choices out there and even helped me figure out how to hang lanterns on my ceiling for an upcoming party. And I appreciate that he makes himself available after the consultation for follow up questions. I will definitely be using him again when I need to shop for additional furniture.

I would highly recommend Ward 5 Design. They helped our our family decorate a 9,500 square ft house with less than 8 weeks lead time, and it turned out great. I started my design journey back in August and chose Ward 5 Design very quickly. Leni made an on-site visit to 1. talk through what I was looking to achieve 2. look at the space and how to reconfigure it 3. make note of any pieces I wanted to keep and incorporate into the design. When Leni sent over the final design board, I was in l-o-v-e. She really nailed my style aesthetic. I very much appreciate the thought and dedication behind each piece that was curated. Ward 5 Design saved my life, not just once but two times! My first experience was in 2016, when living in a very small studio space (380 sq. ft.) in Brooklyn. After the consultation and purchasing an affordable design package, the transformation that occurred turned what little space I did have from mediocre to insta-chic (we even re-wired and installed a vintage chandelier thanks to my designer's resources.) After that point, Ward 5 was forever imprinted on my brain so naturally I reached out to Leni in March when I moved to a new space. Not only was she imaginative, open-minded and communicated each step with patience but she rolls ups her sleeves and gets to work! Her vision breathed new life into my place and all the thanks goes to Ward 5. Its worth it! I'll absolutely call them for my next project.

I had a great experience working with Ward 5 Design. I bought a condo but didn't have any furniture that I really liked and didn't know how to lay out the open concept main room. Max came over to my apartment and we went over my style preferences, budget, and timeline. From there we emailed every couple of days and slowly put together the look and design. Max introduced me to new styles and furniture stores, and helped me to design a space I love. The final result is amazing. I LOVE being at home, I love having people over for dinner, and I can't recommend Ward 5 Design enough. If I ever move again in the future, I will definitely hire them to decorate my new space.

We can't rave about Ward 5 Design enough. They have fantastic taste and are friendly, helpful, responsive and timely. They made a mock-up of our apartment design and sent a specific item checklist of what we needed to buy for our home across our price range. What I especially loved about doing my project this way was that it allowed me the time and flexibility to purchase items when it worked for me. if you're working with a fixed budget this allows you do get the vision and create at your own pace. I've referred friends to Ward 5 for projects big and small. If you're more hands on like myself, the service definitely gives you the flexibility to work that way... Or if you want someone to completely revamp and do it all for you, you have that option. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and highly recommend them!

We are not super fancy and wouldn't normally think about working with a designer. However, our new space had tricky proportions and we couldn't figure out what would work. Leni and her team have an uncanny grasp of space and layout with great creative ideas that we never would have thought of on our own. Once our renovation was done, Ward 5 helped us choose furniture, recommended the right proportions for rugs, artwork, lighting, and gave us other generally insightful design tips. The whole process was affordable, given the quality of service we received, easy, and extremely useful. We will highly recommend Ward 5 Design in the future.

I would like to share my experience with Ward 5 Design. When I contacted them, I was having a hard time figuring out what I wanted for my new home. They were so patient and understanding. They took the time to get to know me and what I wanted. The result was amazing! We’ve worked with Ward 5 Design for years now, (we found them on Houzz)and we couldn’t be happier! Leni and her team did such an amazing job on our first project, our Long Island beach house. We built a several story home for the summers, and we hired Ward 5 Design for all the interiors, from the type of the floors to the bathroom tiles, and furnishings. There are some truly incredible features of Leni’s designs in our house. For our master bedroom, she gave us custom built-in closet units, a custom-designed storage bed, and nightstands, and designed a wood-slatted accent wall that is so unique. For my kid’s rooms (one boy, one girl), she designed and facilitated the construction of the most incredible bunk/loft beds suspended from the ceiling! On top of this, she beautifully designed the rooms to match the kid’s styles through accessories and decor. Our bathrooms look beautiful, all thanks to Leni, and the kitchen would not have turned out so well had we not hired her. Our original design had a very bad layout, which Leni came in and fixed completely, making sure the kitchen is both beautiful and functional. You can see Leni’s personal touches throughout the house from paint colors to our living room furniture, and all the custom work she put in for us, like, our powder room. Leni and her assistant hand-painted a beautiful design that looks like wallpaper, and it made the room feel so special and individual. Hand painting an entire bathroom made us feel like this company really cared about making our home a place we could love. Leni has a team of people who help her with all aspects of design, and always made us feel taken care of throughout this long process. We loved the results of our beach house so much that we hired Ward 5 again for our rental apartment, which desperately needed some love. To no surprise, Leni came in and made our apartment just as beautiful as the first job. She gave our cookie-cutter apartment a personality through her design. It can be hard to let a designer into your personal space and trust them to give you the home you want and love, but Leni and everyone else at Ward 5 Design takes on that task with grace, individuality, and professionalism. After two separate jobs, we are so happy we decided to hire Ward 5 Design and I would recommend anyone in the process of looking for an interior designer do as well.

The people at Ward 5 Design completely transformed our home. We bought a three-story home in Jackson Heights, which was totally outdated in appearance. The property hadn't been redone since the 80’s and it definitely showed. Leni, the head designer, gutted nearly everything, and made it unrecognizable in the best possible way. Perhaps the most incredible feature of her designs was the top floor bedroom. This house was sectioned off into rooms, that we originally intended to just have remodeled. Once Leni and her team of contractors had torn down the ceiling and walls on the third floor, she proposed leaving the space open, not replacing any of the walls, and turning it into one continuous space. Photos do not even do this justice; our home does not look like the same house we originally bought. We are so glad we trusted Leni to do what she does best, because our house reached levels I don’t think even we could ever fathom. Our project is the perfect representation of the capabilities of this company. Each and every room has personal touches and designs that catered to the styles of every person that would be living in it. My mother was thrilled with the elegant and feminine touches that were put into her bedroom and common spaces. Leni and her other designers have a fresh perspective that we did not find in other designers we’ve worked with in the past. Leni has a great team of people that she made sure kept in constant contact with us throughout the process of our project. She not only remodeled the structure of the house, but continued to amaze us with the furnishings that she selected to fill the space. She made clear that she was not the only person working on our project, and introduced us to Max, the young lady assisting her with designing, Gary, her project manager, and so many more people who collaborated to make this space what it is. I needed help furnishing an 1100 square foot second residence. I wanted a modern look so unlike our traditional home and I was in a hurry because we were more or less camping out with a card table and folding chairs, a bed frame and mattress and clothes stored in boxes! Ward 5 Design came through! They were so pleasant to work with and once i was comfortable with what they did for me I had the urge to continue with my own personal touches. We did not go over what we wanted to spend but the total cost may be under stated because invoices were paid as they came in.

Ward 5 Design is a wonderful company. I worked directly with their designer, Max, who is their head of decor and furnishings. I needed help with a couple rooms in my house, like the living room, dining room, and my bedroom. She was able to use a bunch of the furniture that i already have, and added some newly purchased items to make the space look completely new. She kept my budget in consideration and only picked things out that she knew were in my price range. Max also got me some amazing discounts through her brand connections! She kept in constant contact with me throughout the process, and had my job done within weeks, which was impressive. I loved working with this company and will be sure to hire them again in the future.

I don't usually write reviews, but I want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. If you're looking for a professional and honest design and build company that will communicate well, stick to budget, and not waste your time to earn more money, this is NOT the company. Hold on tight, this one's a doozy. We brought Ward 5 Design on board for a backyard and garage renovation project in May of 2019. Our first impressions of Leni (the designer) were that she knew what she was doing, had good ideas for the space, and that she would be able to stick to our overall budget for the project. We agreed to put her on monthly retainer being that our project would take 1-2 months (she estimated work time was 3-4 weeks max). The minute we gave her money was the minute things went downhill. She would take far too long to get back to us whenever we had a question. We wouldn't receive updates on the design process for days at a time, and she would constantly miss her design deadlines. At one point she was taking a trip to Europe for a week and a half, and I discussed pausing her monthly retainer until she got back. Her response was that she would be diligently working on our project despite being overseas. We naively believed her. A month into the project, the design was somewhat coming together. She did a site visit with her contractor, and got back to us on how much the work would cost. It turned out that she had forgotten to design one of the main parts of the project: the garage, and it wasn't included in the price. More time was wasted in doing something we had told her about in the beginning. After the garage was put into the design, we were given a bid which took us over budget. We then asked for competitive bids to see if the first contractor's bid was in the right ballpark, but we received no follow up for that. A month and a half into the project, we asked again for competitive bids, and since no work was being done, if the retainer would be put on hold until a contractor was found. She reassured us that they needed time for "material sourcing". 2 months of retainer were paid thus far with no work to show for other than a design. At this point, we were finally able to put the retainer on hold until we found a contractor. A few contractors came by for site visits with one of Leni's assistants, Gary. While doing the site visit, Gary seemed to not know what the scope of the project really was. I had to constantly tell the contractor what was being done, and it felt completely unprofessional that the design company sent someone who hadn't done their homework on the project. A few more weeks went by and we heard nothing other than one competitive bid which was 4x the price of the original. It seemed like Leni was really trying to get us to work with her contractor and nobody else. One day, one of the contractors stopped by because he had forgotten his bag in our backyard, and he told me that he had received ZERO follow up from the company. He had asked for architectural drawings due to the scope of the project and wasn't confident Gary knew what he was talking about during the site visit. At this point I asked a friend who works in the industry if getting these drawings is out of the ordinary, and to the contrary, she told me that its completely normal and shouldn't have been an issue for my designer. I asked Gary for the drawings and received no response. I was emailed for payment of yet another month's retainer after agreeing to pause the contract until a contractor was found. I called and left multiple messages for Leni, but to no avail. Gary told me she was going through a family situation, which while I understand is difficult and I gave her time, should not have impinged on her work. I still haven't gotten any reply from her. We finally decided to not move forward with the project because of all the red flags and the constantly poor communication. I asked Gary (Leni was not responding to me) to send me the materials list which they had spend 2 weeks allegedly sourcing, and he told me Leni would get back to me. I've gotten no response as of yet, so Ward 5 essentially stole 2 weeks of retainer fees. I've never encountered this kind of service, and would even go so far to call it thievery. After spending $8k for 2 months of design service, all I have to show for are a few design sketches and no specifics. We always paid in full at the beginning of the month and gave Leni more than enough time to rectify her mistakes. If you're thinking about getting any sort of design/build work done, run FAR away from this company.

5 stars plus! We finally bought a house, after years and years of savings, and Leni and her team made it our dream home. Her internal team (Gary and Mimi) and trusted vendors (contractor, carpet, painters, handymen, art advisor, audio specialist) worked so hard to make us happy every step of the way. Her team coordinated everything throughout the process, taking our schedule into consideration. Leni is so creative, knowledgeable and committed to complete customer satisfaction. With her high standards, she selects only the best to work with on her team. She understood and interpreted our vision and budget to create magic in our new home! In her creative process, she advised us where to be more daring with color in some places and less daring in others, where to splurge and where to save.

I had one of Leni's assistants, Max, design my apartment after having the same design for years. After our first consultation and a couple of links sent to each other, Max seemed to know exactly what I wanted and even sent me a couple items i fell in love with on first sight. I met with Leni Calas to redesign the interior of my home. She did a great job selecting the furnishings for my apartment and I am thrilled to have worked with her! Designer came to the house and took lots of pictures of all rooms because she said she will need it for her report to us. Not much of a chat which is fine by us because we know time is important and we rather her invest time in preparing the report. Before she came to the house, we had a phone conversation and explained to her what I really need her for is mainly for flooring of the kitchen because we will sell the house. We also reiterated on her visit that budget is tight however kitchen is the showcase so willing to pay to hire her for kitchen advice. We make sure that she gets paid right away that I even texted her as a reminder that I haven’t received her invoice as I understand that service has to be paid first. So she met us Saturday and according to her , report should be ready by Wednesday and we can discuss Thursday , by phone or meet up in the house. Everything seems o be going well at this point. Then my husband had some work issues and cannot do the Thursday appointment so we texted to let her know and we will just meet her Saturday. Wednesday passed by and there’s no report or any call/email from her. Thursday came and I followed up. Friday morning , I got a text for an apology that there’s a delay and report will be available on Saturday morning. So Saturday morning, report came with the pictures of the rooms with notes and comments. We were so excited to check the kitchen section, that we even missed that she has no report of the master bedroom and the other bedroom, but was disappointed that she has only one advice on the kitchen floor is suggestion of patterned tile (grey encaustic tile). The house is for sale so it should target a lot of people. Patterned tile is not for everyone so when we spoke with her on this during the appointment, she said just use gray to match her suggested subway gray glass tile . We were not thrilled about the rest of her suggestions in other rooms however we don’t care because our focus is the kitchen. Moving on, as we were talking about the kitchen , we asked her about the brick corner that she did not make a comment in the report and she said well deal with that later. So she left and we started shopping for the gray tile. To wrap up, we asked her by email what shade of gray tile should we get to blend with the dining room tile and provided her pictures so we can be done and move on. She did not respond so I texted her. Still no response after a week...I am disappointed as we went though all this hassle and we still didn’t get the help we want. We feel that for $750 she could have answered a couple of extra texts to help us pick the appropriate color gray floor tiles to replace her patterned tile recommendation.

Leni is first and foremost a true professional that is easy to communicate with and goes above and beyond with regards to her presentations and truly understood our needs at every level. I found Ward 5 Design in Houzz.com and that was the best decision of the entire project. I already hired a contractor to remodel my one bedroom apartment in Rego Park. Leni Calas took over on short notice and understood my needs. She is able to bridge her expertise with a customer life style and her rates are reasonable. She was accommodating to my making changes along the way. She saved me money, improved the quality of the final project and am delighted with my new living space.

Beware! I was abandoned by the merchant. Merchant's phone number was disconnected following my expression of disappointment at the "finished" work. I had to hire others to complete and repair the work that her crew left me with. Ward 5 refuses to take professional responsibility for the poor workmanship.

My husband found Ward 5 Design on line it was the best thing he ever did. We met Leni Calas and hired her on the spot to come in and stage our house. I was skeptical at first as I thought it was going to cost us a lot of money but I was wrong she was able to use a lot of what we had so the cost was very affordable. Because of her staging we sold our house on the first open house at above asking price. I would highly recommend staging when selling a home and using Ward 5 Design.

Leni Calas came to our apartment to stage it in preparation for selling it. Her work was part of the services provided by our real estate agent. Leni was professional and helped us declutter and make the place look show ready! She had great props that helped make the place look like one in a catalog. The photos came out great and thanks to her staging and the great work of the Queens Home Team at Keller Williams, we received 19 offers for our place, with several $25K above asking price!

Ward5 Design is not only creative, but they provided staging solutions that were practical, affordable, and stylish. I hired Ward5 Design for a mid sized 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house in Astoria, Queens. Prior to getting the house staged, buyer reactions were lukewarm at best with offers that were way below our asking price.
