Gardner/Fox Associates, Inc

"We at Sterling Kitchen & Bath love being a preferred vendor with Gardner/Fox! We work well together to create beautiful dream kitchens (and baths!) for our clients. They pay attention to the client's wants and needs, and even the smallest detail is important! The end result is always beautiful when working with Gardner/Fox Associates, Inc!"

Period Architecture Ltd.
Architects in Philadelphia
"Joe Mackin and his firm designed us the most beautiful new house. He designed an 1800's style, stone farm house look that is amazing. The attention to detail is incredible. People have been to the house and can't decide if it's just an old house that was added on to, or a new house. We have worked with a handful of architects over the years, and Joe, by far, has been the BEST. We also did not use a builder, my husband an were the general contractors of the house, which is approximately 7,000 sq. feet."

QMA Architects
Architects in Philadelphia
"QMA Design did a major exterior renovation on our house which included new siding, doors, windows, chimney, steps, porch as well as addition of a second story terrace, complete renovation of the front of house to create additional parking space and new landscaped areas. Todd and his project managers and workers did a beautiful job. After the job and to date Todd is extremely responsive if problems develop (and no major problems have developed) or if other new work is needed. I highly recommend this company."

OMNIA Group Architects
Architects in Philadelphia
"Had an investment property that I couldn't sell due to the condition. After contacting the Omnia group they came in and scoped the job. Thy provided me with a workable plan and timeline that took advantage of the space available and maximized it's use. Now I have a completely updated property that I can either rent or sell and they did it fast and for a reasonable amount. I will definably use the Omnia group for my next project."

Karen Beam Architect LLC

Rasmussen / Su Architects
Architects in Philadelphia
"We had a wonderful experience working with Rasmussen/Su on a kitchen renovation. Our home was built in 1879, and it had a cramped and dark kitchen. Kevin & Vivian really listened to what mattered to us (having a space that works for an active family and opens the kitchen up to the rest of the first floor) and they were able to incorporate those things into the design. They have experience with historic homes and local regulations and took care of the arduous permit process. They were there during construction when we ran into the unexpected things you discover in an old house. They also helped with the design details and decisions you have to make during a project. We now have an amazing space where everyone gathers to cook, do homework, and just be together."

Bishop and Smith Architects
Architects in Philadelphia
"We are very pleased with the result of more than a year's work, starting with pen and paper and a discussion on what we needed in a home, reviewing and editing floor plans, getting to plot plans, elevation views, and ultimately a final set of plans. This was no easy task, considering we were building a new home post-Sandy, at the Jersey Shore, and with flood maps changing during the process, being in dual zoning districts, and with required building heights uncertain. But, finally, we are done (mostly!) Scott, Jack and Bill were all great to deal with, they listened to our needs and wants, and helped us make decisions on the trade-offs you always need to consider when space is limited on the lot and you have a long list of needs and wants. The style of the house is a cape cod, the architectural detail is outstanding and it fits well into the existing neighborhood which is situated one block from the start of the historic district here in Ocean City. Ultimately, we love the house and get compliments on it every single day from strangers walking past and from family and friends who are visiting. So many people have asked us if they can have a tour. Thanks Scott, Jack and Bill for everything."

Thomas B Wagner, Architect
Architects in Philadelphia
"Thom was hired to aid in bringing our vision of our dream home to a reality. He worked efficiently, expediently and within our budget thru the design and construction phase. He was always available to answer any questions during each phase of the process. I would highly recommend Thom to design your home."

If your renovation is more than a simple benchtop replacement or roof re-tiling job, then it may be time to find an architect in Philadelphia who can manage your project from start to finish. Depending on the architecture firm you hire, the scope can span from planning sustainable design into your renovations, to selecting furniture and even interior finishes.

How do I find the right architect for my home design project?

An architect is often the first person you hire for your project. Before taking steps to find an architect in Philadelphia, ask yourself what you want to achieve from your renovation or home construction. Do you want to improve the liveability and sustainability of your home, or simply expand? What style of architecture do you prefer? Once you have established your motivation, research architects that have completed similar house designs in your locale and within a comparable budget to yours.

Undergoing renovations, house extensions or building a new home entirely can be stressful. For this reason, it’s important that you and your chosen architect get along and share the same values, especially if you require an architect to help you refine your brief. To establish this rapport, you may need to meet several times with the architects on your shortlist before making a final decision on who you hire. The relationship you have with your architect is very personal, and will involve discussions of your habits, hobbies and tastes, so you want to ensure you have picked someone you feel comfortable in sharing this information with.

Most importantly, you need to trust that your architect will manage your home improvement or house design within budget, while working with site constraints, and coordinating the relationships of all parties involved in the project.

Ideally, your Philadelphia architect will be involved in all phases of the design process, from the initial concept to the completed construction. Your architect may be needed to select and hire subcontractors (e.g. builders, engineers and landscape architects) just as they may need to negotiate contracts with stakeholders. A good client-architect relationship will ensure they are your biggest advocate along the way during construction.

Finally, remember that the most well-known or established architect may not provide the right architectural services for your needs. It all comes down to the individual project.

Questions to ask prospective residential architects in Philadelphia:

  • What is your fee structure?
  • What does the cost include?
  • Do you have professional liability insurance?
  • What types of renderings (3-D, video, illustrative) will you produce?
  • What is your experience with similar projects?
  • When do you expect to start and be finished with the project?
  • What do your services include?
  • What happens when the cost exceeds the budget?
  • Would you say your work has a defining style? (The architect's personal style could interfere with your vision.)
  • Will you help with hiring a project manager and subcontractors?
  • What do you estimate the cost will be?
  • What will I need to provide?
  • Do you foresee any complications with this project?
